maybe there will be a Golf R GTD

http://www.roadandtrack.com/go/news/...-turbo-diesels

Quote:
Imagine this: What the Golf R is to the GTI, the RD cars will be to the GTD. We're talking about the EA288 (translation: the newest TDI four-cylinder engine) with dual twin-scroll turbos bolted on, good for around 442 lb-ft of twist, making the GTD's 280 lb-ft seem positively anemic.

At least, that's what our Volkswagen insider tells us to expect, during a little chat about how the Golf R400 might have ruffled Audi's feathers enough to start a horsepower war that will result in the RS3, previewed by the A3 Clubsport.

So what's it all mean? The rad inline-five might survive the EA888-pocalypse, Audi's going to make sure the RS3 will have enough juice to embarrass its R400 platform-mate, and a bunch of super-quick diesels will start rampaging through (European, most likely) cities.

Oh, here's the less great news: The RD cars will produce so much torque, no VW manual gearbox can handle it. They'll be DCT only.
http://driving.ca/volkswagen/golf/au...r-in-the-works

Quote:
Earlier this week, Volkswagen pulled the wraps off two of its upcoming EA288 turbodiesel engines. Boosted by two twin-scroll turbochargers, the most powerful pumps out 240 horsepower and a very impressive 369 lb.-ft. of torque.

Initially, that engine is expected to appear in the next-generation Passat TDI midsize sedan. But according to Road and Track, a VW insider says we could also see a higher-output variant of the engine under the hood of a diesel Golf R.

Known as the RD, Road and Track’s insider suggests it could be the result of an impending horsepower war between Volkswagen and Audi, thanks to the Golf R 400 and its four-ringed platform mate, the A3 Clubsport Quattro. And because of the massive torque output (think in the neighbourhood of 442 lb.-ft., which seems absolutely unreal for a four-cylinder diesel), the Golf RD might be DCT-only.

Of course, this news is best taken with a large grain of salt, but the idea of a high-output diesel hot hatch resulting from a horsepower war is incredibly appetizing to say the least.

I have a friend with a 2000 Audi A8 that has never had any real problems, and another friend who had an A4, than an S4, and gets red-faced every time anyone even says the word Audi.

Cool story.

I kid!

RD with those numbers would be amazing, but believe it when I see it.

Exclamation

Check out the results APR is getting from the 2.0 TSI in the MQB platform cars.

Unless I'm misinterpreting that, on the GTI, they saw gains of over +70hp and +100tq from *just a reflash*.

Can the MT and DSG transmissions in the new MQB cars even handle that?

^DSG can, but I doubt the manual trans can, unless it is a major improvement from the previous generation's equipment.

Really? The DSG is sturdier than the 6 speed? That seems counter-intuitive.

How about the S-Tronic dual-clutch unit in the new A3?

Unless they changed something dramatically, S-tronic is just the Audi brand name for the VAG DSG.

DSG can handle stage 3 power levels, many MK6 and earlier have manual clutch slip at just stage 1.

That's... really disappointing. Guess stage 1 is really a tune + a different clutch then?

6-speed DSG can handle HPA twin turbo V6 putting out 500 lb ft and 500 WHP with only a flash and clutch upgrade. Over-engineered box and it's well over 10 years old! Of all the things failed or was failing on my MKV, the DSG wasn't one of them.

APR says that they have had their Stage 1 GTI 6MT for a while and beat the living hell out of it and the clutch is holding strong. The Mk6 Golf R's were having issues with anything higher than Stage 1+ but it looks like they have rectified the issue.

APR is reporting the use of Drag Slicks and being able to pull off a 12.67@110mph (DSG) in fairly hot weather.

+87hp and +114tq on 93oct

+97hp and +125tq on 104oct

Pretty god damn stout!
