Neither of which have 265 HP.

But I am not arguing that the EJ is outdated. But expecting more than 22 mpg is reaching, especially at 265+ HP levels.

the A4 has what 201 HP, and the performance to match. I hear what you are saying. That is why I bet with the Subaru DI system a lighter WRX, you can expect either more HP, or better mpg, but probably not both.

if you ask me it come down to why you buy a performance oriented 4 banger.

gas economy, or performance.

if you want to enjoy your commutes, have a car that is truly a joy to drive, get the wrx.

if your looking to grab a car that is a bit cheaper on the wallet, a 4 banger turbo is not the answer. how bout a regular imprezza? or a prius (gag me)

if the question is +mpg or +performance, Subaru would be fools to take mpg. If you want economy car dont get an awd turbo.

Its really as simple as that...

EDIT: also, you dont get a wrx for luxury. the interior is craptastic, the suspension for the most part is subpar until upgraded. the wrx/sti will never be and audi, or a vdubb, or a bmw. It's a rally car(flame on). Its ~25k and for that they give you a solid car that goes vroom vroom. your not paying for leather and a comfy ride.

To stay on topic, I could absolutely see myself in a Golf R, or a the FST, as a DD. but it's not going to be a wrx now is it. Different cars for different people.

I expect the new WRX to get nearly Focus ST type highway numbers. DI, improved aero, and better gearing should help achieve that. Obviously the driver will have to lay off the skinny pedal.

B8 A4 gets 22 city and 31 or 32 highway I think... Not much difference from the Golf R. Impressive when you consider the R has a much more highly tuned engine.

Ahhh, but you didn't mention hp. Here's why I expect more from Subaru: my MY02 WRXs (three of them) got 26 combined all the time. Same drive in my MY11 WRX gets 22 *combined* if I'm lucky. Modestly more power and weight, yes, but nine years worth of technology and mpg is almost 20% lower? Booo.

Direct injection and some other fancy tech in a 2 liter with a bit of weight reduction should be able to get 26mpg city, that's 20%.

Man I get only 18-20 in the city in mine. Combined it do terrible too since I don't take as many long trips now. Even then though with bikes on the roof the mileage was crap.

Well snowphun that is where I think you may be off a little

There is not 9 years of technology difference between the 2002 and the 2011. In fact they are exactly the same tech, but the 2011 weighs more and has a larger engine.

That's my point: the nine year newer car gets worse gas mileage. In that time most cars would have leveraged technology and manufacturing advancements to improve their mpg and hp. Subaru only managed to improve hp while hurting economy, not impressive. So I expect a significant improvement with the new setup.

Roundup of Mk7 GTI reviews. If the Golf R is this plus more... I think we have a winner.

Thanks, I can tell that you're back in bed with Subie as I'm probably getting out.

Yes, it does look very good (I haven't seen this much pre-production hype since, the BRZ/FRS...the reviewers are going bonkers over this). An impressive golf and gti means a very good Golf R.

Nothing for me is for sure except what I am driving today. I will certainly give Subaru a chance to win my business, but I will not be buying another car until I get to drive the Mark 7R

C&D is reporting that the GTI performance pack will in fact make its way over to the US. I hope that this carries over to the Golf R and something similar is offered for those who want a little more than stock for the oem.

Oh holy crap, the states don't get the Mk7 GTI until Summer 2014? When is the R, a year or two after that?

Geesus crimany.

I'm equally as excited about the updated Sportswagen, however.

Yes, that is how it has been, but they made a few statements that they may be moving away from that.

That's what I heard as well, and that the European model should be revealed at this falls Frankfort auto show.

Motor authority's article on the spy video offers more attention to sound of the exhaust note, and attribute it to adjustable valve technology borrowed from the Audi S3. A production model is expected to be revealed at Frankfort.
