My current GTI is the longest i've been able to keep a car. Will be 2 years on Wednesday and already put on 42.5k miles. Have until 60k miles for my warranty. I need to inquire about a 100k mile warranty as I fear ill hit that in 2 years time.

Honestly, I think it's ambitious to even hope that Volkswagen will build enough of these in *any* color.

Of course we don't know how many they plan to produce but one would think that it will be a decent amount when you consider the fact that this new R won't be a limited production model.

I am really happy to see the Golf R get the accolates it so richly deserves. I am also proud of my NASIOC brethern who are willing to jump ship, if only to try what else is available. One week in the R will tell you just how far behind the STI has fallen. I personaly guaranty you that.

I don't know about that. That have spent the money to make a proper beast. Why would they spend the development cost, announce the USDM offerings then muck it?

Based on everything i've researched I believe you're right. Though saying that, I will miss the heated front wipers and...... oh wait, that's about it

I hope you're right, but they already seem to be restricting the NA specs compared to the ROW e.g. officially there will be no 8" screen or 19" wheels, 4-door only, DSG only initially etc (though the 18" wheels, 4-doors & DSG is exactly what I want).
The dealer I intend to buy from is also being pessimistic about the options that will be available, based on what i'm not sure. We'll just have to wait and see....

all of that is to keep the USDM cost down as Americans are bitches when it comes to price.

And because it's awesome is the exact reason we won't get it.

Well that and the fact it doesn't make economic sense to bring it to the U.S. but I'm going to harp about American never gets the cool stuff bro.

No RS6 Avant, no Mazda 6 Wagon no fast and practical vehicles unless they sticker for $100k I'm looking at you C63 AMG wagon.

Stupid American disdain for wagons is killing us. Fast wagons are simply awesome.

The GLA also tries so desperately hard to not look like a wagon...saw my first one today. It looks goooood.

mercedes has turned a corner. IF you exclude the CLA, their cars are looking really good. The new C class has me nervous.

Looks like a VW Golf; from Mk4 (1997) to Mk7 (present), they haven't changed in looks much, at all.

Maybe it's time they did something that looks different, and not the same old boring thing?

Oh wait, you were being serious. The only thing similar between the mk7 and the 4/5 are the fact that it's a hatch.

You might need an eye exam .

MK5 to MK7 has definitely been an evolution, but MK4 was nothing like them.

Default Golf R is now on VW.com

http://www.vw.com/models/golf-r/

292 HP
Dynamic Chassis Control i.e. adjustable dampers
4.9secs (DSG)
23/30mpg

Not so keen on the 5.8" nav screen, no LED tail lights, or the 19" Cadiz wheels, was actually hoping for 18"s

Supposedly VW Canada are holding off until summer of 2015 to bring it here as a MY2016, i'm hoping for at least the 6.5" screen and LED tails that the ROW seem to get.

Even so, practically every review i've read indicate that this is one stunning hatchmobile

Scrappy - I really do wonder sometimes: Yes the R is good, but how can you say the STI has "fallen" behind when in fact it is quicker and has a better chassis.

Car------------------Laptime
WRX STI---------------1.41.5
VW Golf R--------------1.41.9
BMW M235i------------1.42.7
Subaru WRX----------1.42.8
Audi S3----------------1.43.4
Holden SS V Redline----1.43.5

Judges top 5 (5 judges in total)
1) WRX STI
2) VW Golf R
3) Ford Fiesta ST
4) Renault Clio RS
5) BMW M2351

There are virtually no back to back tests of the STI and R - above is the most recent one from Motor Magazines Bang For Your Buck challenge (same driver). The track used is Winton, it is specifically used as it is regarded as a technical track.

The new STI has first rate driving dynamics, to say it has fallen behind is just plain wrong. The R is also very good too. No one disputes this, but to suggest the STI has fallen significantly behind is not correct and not supported by the evidence.

The STI does what it says on the box, as Motortrend found and as the guys at Motor Magazine found - the quotes are very telling "the STI obliterated the track test" "the new STI is a revelation".

These types of tests are important as they get behind the advertorial and subjective articles and look at the real sum of the parts.

You really can't see why someone would consider a car that is ~0.5% slower on a supposedly technical track and about 50% better as a daily driver than the STI, for about the same price, to be the superior car? Or are you just fishing for an argument?

A slightly faster ****box, or a slightly slower composed good looking premium hatch with a fabulous interior. Hmmmm hard choice.

**** box every time. The golf's tend to feel very clinical in comparison. There is a lot less joy, at least in the mk6

I guess there are those of us who don't live our lives a quarter of a mile at a time. For us we'd rather not have a poorly damped rattletrap with a thirsty ancient engine. We'll take the hit on the negligable outright speed and vague notions of "clinical" feel.

P.S. a synonym for "clinical" could easily be "sophisticated"
