Default Front bumper - underside protection

Hey guys,

I live in NJ and the roads here are horribly maintained. Last week I was pulling out of a parking lot and the curb line/asphalt were not level (was nighttime and could not see)

So now I have a scratch on the underside of the front bumper. I'm about 99.9% sure this will happen again at some point, so I need to figure something out. I was thinking about taping off the lower part of the bumper and spraying some kind of black foam on the underside so it will just drag that instead.

Good idea, bad idea? Anyone done anything else like this? The scratch is not really visible, but it's there and it bothers me.

Got a link or photo? I don't really see the sense is paying money for something like this when it's going to suffer the same fate. I think a light coating of dark foam would soften up the impact and certainly not make that same sound like fingernails on a chalkboard

After looking around on the garage foam stuff, I will end up going that route, but slightly different. I intend on cutting it flat and sticking it on the underside just as an absorber. I don't think it looks good hanging out past the bumper.

I bought a poly lip off of eBay for ~$60. I hit a huge mass of ice when I was up in NH and it tore the lip off. My bumper was still in mint condition!
