Default Nameless Muffler Delete and VA State Inspection Question

I went to a gas station in Reston, VA and asked an employee if they check for the muffler. He said "yes" and that I wouldn't pass with no muffler.

From my research I was consistently told that I would be fine with passing inspection since the safety check list doesn't require a check for the muffler.

Did this guy just not know what he was talking about? I didn't actually show him my car or the Nameless exhaust. Just said that I had no muffler.

Thanks for your replies and insight.

When you said no muffler he may have assumed you meant NOTHING at all instead of a straight pipe.

Technically yes, but it's one of those things you would probably be better off not pointing out if the car is not that loud. Did you even talk to the inspector or just some random gas station employee?

My experience is that most of these guys don't care and are incredibly random in their enforcement of items like that. Of course that is mostly from experiences getting a motorcycle inspected.

I have the nameless and have never had a problem with inspection.

Thanks for the replies. I'm hoping that's what he thought (that I actually don't have anything at all versus a straight pipe).

And it's not that loud to me - especially now that its been broken in. I'm still running a stock downpipe.

That's good to hear. Did you go to a gas station or to the dealership?

Thanks again everyone.

There shouldn't be an issue with no mufflers. Perhaps he thought you meant no cat? I don't know VA emission laws, but in PA you'd fail without a cat. Mufflers are only to reduce the volume/tone of the exhaust... So unless VA has really strict laws restricting exhaust volume to within a certain DB level that you're surpassing, you shouldn't have any issues.

Perfect - this is what I wanted to hear - thanks.

I'm guessing he just didn't know exactly what I was talking about - probably should have showed him. The reason I want to make sure is because the last thing I want is a rejection sticker that will attract cops. Then, the cop will probably give me a ticket for having no muffler.
