Default Tuning: Using COBB AP after the Subaru Recall Reflash

Hey all,

Lets start with my info:
2012 WRX Sedan

Mods:
Invidia Catless Turbo back Exhaust
AEM Cold Air Intake
AEM Wideband AFR

Problem: So I went to Subaru dealership for the recall where they had to reflash my ECU. I unmarried the AP (stock map re installed on ECU) for the reflash then when I got my car back remarried it and tried to Reflash my ECU with a non-COBB tune. (been getting e-tunes from a well known tuner friend) The AP said that the map was locked to a certain serial #.

The map on the AP is greyed out instead of white...

So what gives? My tuner's maps are not locked like I thought and should be in reference to my AP's serial # (which hasn't changed!).

Any help would be appreciated!

Just curious why did you go for the reflash if you are already Stage 2? It's kind of obvious that you have have an aftermarket downpipe and intake on there unless you reverted completely back to stock when you took it to the dealer. Just saying.

Went in for my free oil change and didn't want to take the chance of them reflashing it and F*ing my car up completely. Plus, I need to register my car soon so I need it. Also, I know the service manager at this place well, stage 2 friendly.

It's not inconceivable that your e-tuner locked his "tune" to a particular ECU calibration ID to prevent trouble when used with a CalID which he had not yet examined/tested.

What did your e-tuner tell you when you asked this question?

What did the readers of the Engine Management & Tuning (AccessPort) forum here at NASIOC tell you when you asked this question?

What did the readers of Cobb Tuning's forums say when you asked this question there?

Doesn't matter what the service manager or dealer says.

His tunes are only locked to a particular AP. How could he know the ECU calibration ID of my ECU?

And I called COBB support and asked them the same question. They didn't know why I couldn't install the map.

And the usual step I take after using the almighty "search" button and don't find any relevant results is to ask the community of subaru owners in hopes that someone has dealt with this. There are many tuners out there that might chime in...maybe...wouldn't you think?

The only real way to get an answer is to call whoever did the tune and ask them.

because Subaru will keep hounding you to get the WQC-39 or WTF ever it's called until it's done.

if you DON'T get it done, they will NOT allow any more warranty work or recall work to be done on your car.

that's what my dealer told me. anywho, i hand no issues reinstalling my protune once they did it. YMMV.

Done and done...waiting on reply...possibly new map...just seeing if anyone else experienced this...

Are the periods overkill?

And really, if you were in my area I'd say lets meet and see what happens.

If only mods could ban users for being rude. that would be the day.

So...back to the question, think I got enough help from Socal Subies. Thanks.

Over here in the great state of CAlifornia, you need it to get your car registered. My dealership told me to hold onto the slip/notice that states the recall has been done in accordance to emmissions standards (which i thought was weird cuz i thought the ecu recall was for coolant temp? but whatever) - and that anytime registration/renew/smog is done, DMV may ask for that slip.

yaAAaaayyyy californiaaaaa.

keep us (well at least me) updated skatereno. i'm curious what the e-tuner will do.

As an update for crick0234, i'll fill you in when I find the actual cause...but pretty sure it has to do with his tuner program. The Map might have been associated with a wrong key or firmware update.

Are you sure you unmarried? You went in and chose "Uninstall"?

That is a lot different than just flashing back to the stock map. If you flashed stock map, then your AP was still married when they reflashed your car. Read: Not good.

I actually did this recall today as well with an oil change. I flashed back to stock and unmarried, car ran like ****. I limped it into the bay. Specifically told them not to drive it out of the lot whatsoever (no boost). I freaked out the same way you did, but instead of hitting maf tuning, hit the "sd tuning" option. Your custom map should be there...hopefully

Well I selected the uninstall button, it reverted my tune back to stock and went directly to the menu screen that described how to use the AP. so unless I'm missing something I should be fine.

I was, but a previous tune...not the latest which is weird.

And it is in this forum because honestly the number of people seeing this thread is way greater than a specific technical forum...

And in the end, I would like to shed some light on why this problem happened and how it should be addressed in the future. That is meant for the general community.

Hmmmm...do you know what I'm talking about though when I say "maf tuning" and "sd tuning"? I freaked out when I was in the mad tuning option because it said my protune was locked, just like your sitch. So I went to "sd tuning" and there it was.

I was scared to death to do this recall because I didn't want these jack offs at the dealership doing anything stupid. Glad it's over.

Yeah General gets more traffic, but it's a bunch of mouth breathers. Take a quick look around here at other threads. Yeah. You have better luck getting intelligent and knowledgable responses from the technical forums.

Within a day it will be buried under new threads about what exhaust they should get, or drifting in blizzards and running into eachother, or other subarus not waving to you. It's pointless to post anything worth while in here.

Sad to see a Nasioc Supporter stoop to the level of some people here. I'm here for advice and I'm pretty sure that what a forum is for.
