Default Upgrading Head Unit and want Sepc reccos

So i apologize if this is a common thread but i'm looking to upgrade the HU and want some spec recommendations.

I know from hunting around and researching here that its best for me to just go out and play around with some HUs until i find one that has the features i want and the functionality i want. the question i had is what specs am i looking for?

For example i went onto bestbuy.com to just poke around and most of the HUs i see are 50Wx4. would that be sufficient power and channel? i'm not looking to compete in stereo challenges and i value fidelity over volume (tho both would be sweet). I'm still in the planning stages and am willing to spend a good chunk of money on the system as a whole (possibly up to $1000).

I will be upgrading the speakers following the HU but i'm going to do it piece-meal just wanna make sure i start with enough.

I use a Kenwood Excelon X-996 head unit. I don't have a sound system in my STi and all of this is installed in my daily driver Sentra. I spent under $1000 on the whole setup and it sounds really good. I bought everything on eBay through authorized sellers (this is important so you will get the factory warranty). Everything Kicker (my favorite brand) was purchased through HalfPriceCarAudio on eBay. Mind you I did the whole install myself so I saved a lot of money that would normally be spent on labor. It is easy enough to do this stuff yourself if you just take your time. Also, don't let it deceive you that I only have a single 8" sub. I've been told my amplified door speakers combined with the 200 watt 4 ohm 8" sub have as much bass as my friends who have single 10" or 12" subs. I mainly look for sound quality so this might not be exactly what you're looking for if you are the type that likes to rattle parts off your car.

$220 Kenwood Excelon X-996 head unit (I have always loved their head units)
- Bluetooth (I use this all the time for the hands free calling)
- Pandora (don't use it but it works)
- HD Radio (simply a must for me)
- Top of the line features for an almost unbeatable price

$150 Kicker 2010 ZX350.4 4-channel amplifier (refurbished by Kicker with a 1 year warranty)

$125 Kicker KS650.2 6.5" 4 ohm 75 watt RMS speakers for the front

$60 Kicker DS65 6.5" 4 ohm 50 watt RMS speakers for the rear (on your car you would substitute the DS525 5 1/4" speakers or KS525 if you want better sound quality)

$80 Kicker CVT8 8" 4 ohm 200 watt RMS subwoofer (in a stock sealed box for better sound quality and to take up the smallest amount of trunkspace)

$120 Kicker ZX300.1 300 watt RMS single channel (mono) amplifier for the sub (refurbished with a 1 year warranty)

$60 worth of Scosche subwoofer wiring kits and speaker wire from Walmart

Total: $815
