At least? That's a pretty lofty target, to be honest. I don't mind the delay, I'll wait to download the SkyHD coverage not long after the race is over.

Ferrari, Lotus, RBR, Mclaren...all seem like solid performers to me for the 13' season. Not sold on the Mercs yet, is it just me or does the nose on the Merc look like a duck's bill?? I think it looks like ***** personally. I would have rather seen last years stepped noses...Go Iceman!!!!

It does look like a duck bill, I don't like either, but its designed that way for reason.

Its weird how Ham left McLaren last year and had reliability issues, goes to Merc and now Merc has reliability problems.

They need to give Brawn complete control of that team.

Im sure it has a purpose, and that purpose is def not too look good lol...I was completely baffled by Hamiltons change to Merc myself, but I am a huge fan of Ross Brawn and I agree completely about him being the man in charge, I mean look at 2009, Brawn owned that season

I still feel that 2009 was a fluke for them. Somehow they were the first to exploit a loophole in the regulations. It wasn't a completely dominant season, everyone else was breathing down their necks at the end.

Three teams exploited the same loophole from the beginning of the season, not just Brawn.

Of course, they weren't the only ones, but in the end that season wasn't dominant throughout and they haven't been able to repeat those results in the years following. They got lucky.

I don't think you can't argue with results, Brawn has lead teams to multiple championships.

First year of the team, first race ever for the team, and a win for the race and a win for the WDC, again on its first and only year, carrying his name "Brawn" (NEVER BEEN DONE BEFORE EVER!). Definitely feel like it was a good car but they definitely got lucky!!!!

Thats kinda when i started to watch F1 so i didn't really realize what was happening but now looking back, so rare and lucky!

But Brawn is a Genius!! Win WCC and WDC with ferrari, Benetton (95'), and brawm... I hope he can do the same with Mercedes!

Not denying Ross Brawn's track record. Just kind of not expecting much out of the former BAR to Honda to Brawn team for this year... now with Merc money you would think that they would be able to achieve more. We should see a bigger shakeup in the team order when the new regs. come in next year.

i honestly see this year as a building year for the merc. there is already a ton of hype about their 2014 motor and car plans. i dont see them competiting for a WCC or WDC. i see them building and adding to focus on a 2014 car. But i see 2013 as being another epic year for f1 as RBR Ferrari Lotus and Mclaren will be fight it out all season! With a suprise win or poll for williams/sauber as a spoiler

Quote:
The number of viewers across the world watching Formula One on TV fell slightly in 2012 with a marked decline in the audience in China accounting for most of the decline.

While the overall TV audience slipped from around 515 million in 2011 to just over 500 million, in China there was a 34% drop, largely caused by a number of grands prix clashing with local sports events.

The 2012 figures were included in Formula One′s annual broadcast report which measured the number of people who watched more than 15 non-consecutive minutes throughout the season.

"A small handful of territories didn't meet expectations in terms of reach," Bernie Ecclestone admitted, "with the Chinese market suffering a decrease which could not be absorbed by a significant number of increases elsewhere."

On the plus side, figures showed an increase in Brazil, Spain and Italy, but fell in the US, UK, Russia and China. The data will be monitored closely by teams and sponsors.

2008 - 600 million
2009 - 520 million
2010 - 527 million
2011 - 515 million
2012 - 502 million
I have a few theories about this, but I'm going to pose them as questions to see what you lot think.

What factors do you think are causing the general drop in viewership since 2008? Races held in more obscure places outside Europe (goodbye Turkey and France, hello India and Abu Dhabi)? Successive titles by RBR/Vettel? Lack of serious new team contenders or surprising young blood? Loss/reduction of broadcasters like the BBC and others? A combination? Something else?

More specific numbers here: http://www.guardian.co.uk/media/2013...formula-one-tv

whoa... dropped from 600 to 502 in the past 5 years?

I am going to guess races being held in more obscure places.

The successive titles might have something to do with it, but the season has become way more exciting in the past 4 years.

Maybe Schumacher retiring?

no, because the time slot isnīt that bad for european viewers

Successive titles by RBR/Vettel?
no

Lack of serious new team contenders or surprising young blood?
no

Loss/reduction of broadcasters like the BBC and others?
thatīs the point. Changing from free TV to pay TV (France, England and I donīt know where else too) will divide your viewer numbers.

I can watch F1 on Free TV or on Pay-TV in germany, the average viewer numbers in germany are 5.580.000 for free TV and 370.000 for pay TV

If F1 wouldnīt be aired on free TV anymore the pay TV viewers may double, but not more.

I'm bucking the trend--if anything, I'm watching more F1. I don't miss a single session.

BUT, I don't figure into the overall numbers because I don't watch races live on TV. I torrent everything and sometimes just go to the race.

Who here has bought something specifically because you saw it advertised on an F1 broadcast? When I moved to England I immediately got mobile service with Vodafone, despite their terrible data rates, because I wanted to "support my team".

I can see the #'s going down as repeat with rbr/vettel did get boring last year but hopefully next year with Kimi doing well, Sergio in McLaren and lewis in Mercedes... Should be interesting! I know I'm mote excited then ever for the season to begin and 2014 with the engines... I'm sure the #'s will rise.

in all honesty....this worked for me only once...back in 1985, Iīve changed from John Player Special to West

nope, if youīre a Vettel fan you will watch because you want to see him winning....and vice versa, you want to see him losing if you hate him.

The return of Michael Schumacher may have reactivated some old fans watching F1 again.

without actual viewership numbers from each country it's pretty difficult to gauge/estimate a correct answer.

This past season was more than interesting. Vettel is obviously not to blame for the past 5 years of viewership being in steady decline. No way this has anything to do with who's on the grid. We had 6 WDCs last year.

I don't watch practice sessions, but I watch every qualifying and race including buildup and post-commentary along with the weekly Sky F1 show. Again, I torrent these so I'm not in their statistics. I don't have cable to watch live but even if I did, I'd seek out Sky or BBC coverage online.
