Anybody on here going to Austin this year? I went last year and had a blast, would be cool to have a meetup there

I'm moving back to the states in September, and my best friend lives in San Antonio (and went to the race last year). I plan on going.

You're in NYC, you should just join us in Montreal!!

I love that when I wake up to go to work the next three days there will be F1 testing going on!

Fernando Alonso gets his first taste of the F138 and Adrian Sutil will Give the new Sahara Force India a few runs around. The latter is hoping to land the final available seat on the grid.

We'll likely see more new parts introduced as the teams start to evolve from their baseline setups, though we may not see anything truly revolutionary until the final test next month. Mclaren are rumored to be readying a stepped nose that was photographed by Ted Kravitz at the factory a few weeks ago. We may see some teams try to refine their rear wing stalling devices, as this track lacks very high-speed corners.

Maybe, just maybe, we'll start to see some kind of pecking order.

Quote:
Williams technical director Mike Coughlan is certain that the vane in the FW35's exhaust outlet is legal despite similarities to a controversial part on the Caterham.

The Caterham CT03 features a vane that some rival outfits - and Coughlan - believe to be illegal even though the team itself is adamant it is permitted.

That area of the car was subject to an FIA technical directive last year designed to prevent the re-ingestion of exhaust gases.

Coughlan argued that because Williams's vane is in two parts, unlike Caterham's single piece, it is within the rules.

"For me, the Caterham one is really not allowed but ours is OK," said Coughlan.

"If you look at ours, it's not a single piece - it's two pieces.

"You're governed by total aperture size and [the need for it to be] a single aperture.

"Ours is a single aperture joined by a very small slot, so it's actually two pieces."

Coughlan is also confident that the team has made a step forward with its Coanda exhaust.

Williams ran the concept at the end of last year in free practice and found that it performed well on Friday in Brazil, but opted not to take the risk of racing with it.

Coughlan confirmed that his team had "more than" halved the power loss experienced last season thanks to the changes needed to the exhaust pipes.

"We spent quite a lot of time doing Coanda studies and ensuring that we understood the compromise between power and downforce and we've done a good job there," he said.

"That is helped an awful lot by Renault's understanding of engine mapping so we are very pleased.

"That does give us a significant step forward.

"All we were cautious of, and maybe too cautious of [last year], was the loss of power.

"You have to remember that last year people spent a lot of time doing that work and we perhaps didn't and maybe should have done.

"We tested Coanda in Brazil and maybe we could have brought that a little bit earlier."

The Williams FW35 made a successful start to its first test, with Pastor Maldonado completing a total of 47 laps on the first morning at Barcelona.

Check out the back of the Williams. There's no taper in the rear, it just kind of ends. As in if someone just chopped part of it off. Interesting.

<--- not smart enough to understand why

Best photo I've seen so far of Williams' exhaust solution:

Edit: torquemada's were just as good or better.

Testing is fun to follow, but man am I looking forward to March 17. Only 23 days!!

I am very hopeful for Perez in his new seat. I'm also very excited to see what Sauber can do with their new lineup, I think they'll be very solid. I would love to see Lotus win more and so far Raikkonen looks very strong, so again, I'm hopeful. I've never been a big Hamilton fan, so I hope his time at Mercedes will teach him something and he will grow as an individual - is that too hopeful?

I always watch testing with a sense of great anticipation and excitement to see what each team is able to develop over the winter. Seeing the Williams exhaust solution may be illegal is frustrating...I hate how innovation is stifled. So many ideas are either outlawed immediately or are reserved for the chopping block the following season.

I also get the sense that each of the top teams is keeping something in reserve...to not show their hand too soon. I believe Mclaren showed theirs in the first test when Button went so quick on a green track. I think Rosberg's time-topping performance today was very close to the maximum that car can deliver right now. RBR is content to jsut run their program, confident they have at least a second in hand versus what they showed today.

More to come in a few hours!

I love watching Ted's notebook after races and it's great to see pitlane coverage during testing as well. @ 11:22

All 4 days from Jerez are up as well.

Huh, didn't notice before that Mercedes isn't running a coanda exhaust. I guess I should pay more attention.

Mercedes are testing the tire temperatures with changing between coanda exhaust and an exhaust with a pipe.

All teams are heaving problems with medium and soft tires (supersofts arenīt tested at this point)

Now that you mention it, I did see a tweet from Craig Scarborough (ScarbsF1) that mentioned Merc was running periscope exhausts today.

Tickets for Singapore just went on sale. Too bad it rains so much there and almost every view is through a fence.
