Default 05 jdm sti rear spats on 04 wrx bumper install ?'s

im looking to pick up a set of jdm 05 sti rear spat knockoffs to mount on my 04.. unfortunately, i like the look of these ALOT better than the 04 ones..

i want to hear from people who successfully mounted them. i read online that there is only minor modification needed, but no one goes into detail about it. every other thread on this goes dead after people say it cant be done... these are the spats im talking about:

i found a set of painted ones, and im wondering if the "modifications" needed will ruin the paint.. no point in buying them if i have to get them repainted after

please help!

I am also interested in this. I just picked up an 04 sti and have been contemplating putting the 05 rear bumper and overs or doing the jdm rear spats.

The bottom of the bumper doesn't seem very different. Maybe the holes are a little different? Because the bumpers look the same to me.

I was originally planning on getting an 05 bumper with the flares, but now can't find any and don't want to pay $500+ new for set of very small flares. If I'm going to spend that much I'll go with Karltons.

I just want to make sure these will fit my 04 bumper before I get a set and can't get them on the bumper.

hard to say without seeing an 04 bumper next to an 05, but i dont think they will need much modification, possibly a little sanding or smoothing to be flush. I have an 05 with the spats, and I had to drill the hardware into the bumper regardless, so there aren't really "holes" that would be "off." good luck and let us know what you come up with.

Not much of an update, but I got them about a week ago. They look pretty close and don't look like they will very hard to fit.
I will be removing the rear bumper to fix some scratches next week, and will post an actual update then.
(I'm still driving the car right now, and my Rally Armors are in the way of test fitting the spats. I don't want to remove them now, since they will have to go back on, off, and on again.)

I had to use epoxy to cover the gap on the sides where the factory bumper has the tiny groove, as you can see the spats hide that. They bolt to the inner fender well nicely, though the bottom edge needed a spacer. also mine came with a bracket for the middle that I used to attach the lower section to the bumper. Ill post pictures tonight as the night time shots I have dont show much lol

there is the mount in the rear spat, its about 1/2 way back mounted to the OEM bumper and then the center screw(which were included) is through the underside of the spat.

there is the finished product on my wagon.

So after a few months, I finally got them on. It took some time because they were part of a bunch of other stuff being painted and worked on, and were low on my priority list.
Either way, they're on now. I don't have any pictures, but the install wasn't a big deal. I didn't add anymore tape, I just added a few screws at the bottom, used the existing tape, and used a heat gun to lightly heat the side so it would mold in. It was pretty simple, and was almost as if the mold was just slightly off, although that wasn't the case.

tl;dr, go for it, you just need a heat gun and a few screws.

all I needed to do was epoxy the top edge on near the wheel wells. 3M body mold tape holds great. Other then that there is a small standoff mount that came with mine that I mounted near the back on the underside. total time, 30minutes. Maybe 15minutes a side due to mixing epoxy.
