I had a whining sound on deceleration and from 40-60mph and I narrowed it down to the center dif. I removed it today and I need a little advice concerning the viscous coupling.

There is a little discoloration from heat but it's not to bad. A large ring is damaged and there were loose pieces floating around the dif. What is this ring for? Is it part of the viscous coupling? Is the viscous coupling supposed to spin freely or with little effort. The gears in mine seem to be stuck is this normal? I haven't put much torque on them but it seems like I shouldn't have to.

Are there any other ways to diagnose the VC?

And another one goes.... Go to Subaru and buy a new one. It's only $600. It'll have more viscous locking since it'll be new. Stuck the new one in and drive for another 150k miles
