Default CVT problem!!!

Hi guys, been lurking around the forum for a while. Just want to share with you what happened on my 2013 limited swp w/ CVT tranny. Just this afternoon, i take it to the dealer for the reason that i am hearing a ticking noise underneath the car while its in motion. I already suspect it was the tranny. The noise will only be heard when your running really slow (like 5-10mph) as you cant hear it when running fast because of road noise and some stuff. After the technician test drove it, the service manager came back to me and told me that i was right. Something broke inside the CVT and that they have to replace it. Currently 38k miles now on the car.

I sometimes hear clicking noises too, but only when i turn off the engine. I always believed/thought it was from the expanding/contracting metal from the engine or exhaust. Now i am a bit worried. However, i never really heard any noises while driving (slow or fast).

Does anyone else have clicking only when the engine is shut off?

The ticking noises you're referring to is the running gear cooling off and contracting. Every car I've owned has done it. That's about 15 fwiw lol!

Actually it can be a lot of things, but it's usually something like the exhaust because that gets so hot.

That sucks, man. Hopefully yours is an isolated incident.

How long were you hearing it before you took it in (how many miles, if you can recall)?

Could you describe the noise with a little more detail? Like, is there a pattern or rhythm to the ticking? Does it speed up with MPHs or RPMs?

38k miles
Its like a rotating ticking noise
When running 5-15mph the ticking is also slow
Rhytm? I found it like as if the ticking were as one with the wheels while its rotating(1 tick/1 full wheel rotation)
When i go over 20mph couldnt hear it anymore because of the engine and transmission natural noise and the ticking goes faster too. Thats why i told the guy at the dealer to drive it only around their parking lot so he could not go over 20mph.

It's not. I can't remember who, but someone else needed to have their cvt replaced back in May, iirc.

Hmm... Hopefully bryzzz will get back to us when it's fixed and can tell us what was the cause of its failure.

Maybe it has to do with something with the differential.

With spatial ability you can figure where the noise come from under the car, if the noise come from the chain of the CVT, it would come more where the brake & accelerator are positioned. If it come near the shifter, I would suppose it has to do with the gears that power the rear axle.

bryzzz_05,

Are you still around? How did this end? Did they say how it failed?

I hate it when folks have a MAJOR Mechanical failure that is extremely rare, and don't stick around to finish telling their tale. Why even share it to begin with? Ugh

^^^ +1

It's still an isolated incident as far as I'm concerned.

Yeah this make two that I've heard of. Out of hundreds of thousands. Three if you count my local dealership: they said a kid brought an impreza in with cvt problems and plenty of evidence that he was hooning it off-road. Mud and grass stuck everywhere in the undercarriage. Probably rally racing

I had my CVT replaced on my '11 Legacy with about 69k on it. It had a similar issue and wanted to stall when coming to a complete stop sometimes. I was only the 2nd CVT replacement that dealer has done. They've been open for quite a few years too.

I've read about those early Legacys and Outbacks. That was the first gen CVT, which had torque converters failing early due to some kind of fluid valve failure. They have subsequently fixed those issues in 2nd Gen by going to a needle type valve. The torque converter was only a $1200-ish repair job. Those CVT belts and pulleys were fine, just the TC that went bad. Good thing, because a new subaru CVT runs about $8000. No way to open one up and just replace the belt or pulleys. Yet.

Here's the thread:

http://legacygt.com/forums/showthrea...si-215157.html

P.S. It might be a good idea to have the CVT fluid changed every 50k miles rather than 100k miles or never. Some folks said it was brown when it came out instead of light blue like when it was new. I know color has little to do with a lubrications' useful remaining life but . . . CVT is a sealed system, so the only way the fluid turned brown was extreme heat. And excessive heat WILL destroy a lubricant.

Ok so it was me who had the cvt fail this winter. Story goes as such; I was at a red light and a truck turning left opposite me had a left advance. As he turned, he slid out on black ice right at me. I put it in reverse but before it engaged I had gotten to 3000k. I jumped back and heard a huge crunch and ease the able to move in any gear. The mud and grass in my wheel wells was due to me driving on my land which Is primaraly dirt roads and grass. I had 800 miles on the car and no I wasent beating on it.

So you pretty much neutral dropped it in reverse @3k RPM with 800 on the odo?

Yes. I made a split second decision and decided to try to back up rather than possibly be killed. I accidentally applied gas before I was in gear and that was the result.

And yes this was through van bortel. They called be asking about the mud and grass after I dropped it off and I explained everything to them

It should be said that I'm at 7500 miles on my new cvt and i haven't had any issues other than a slight clutch burning smell when I accelerate hard, I;e, entering the highway

Well it's cool that you were willing to share that story with us. The shop didn't mention anything other than what I posted. I'm sure they don't want to be known for talking about customers behind their backs.

no problem. i understand how they probably assumed i was hooning it around but once i cleared things up there was no issue. i think had they thought i was beating on it they would have denied the warranty. i really wish i had gotten the 5mt though. cvt is not my cup of tea

Do you get a slight burning smell when you go through gears fast?

Could it be the clutches in the differentials?
