Default 84 cv joint replacement

I have an 84 subaru GL-10 front wheel drive and i just found out the passenger side cv joint boot is ripped (is making quite a noise right now) so i decided check the driver side for shats and giggles...thers was no giggling when i found that one was ripped too...I have a haynes manual for subaru's from 80-94 and it claims that i need a special tool to separate the steering knuckle from the drive axle. and that i need to take it to a mechanic to seperate them. Is there anyway i can do this at home? i dont have a ton of money to throw at this...and dont want to spend the 500 dollars to have both replaced by a mechanic. any help would be greatly appreciated!

Most of the time you wont need a tool, the axle can be pursuaded out with a soft blow hammer or a hammer/block of wood.
Heres a write up from USMB.
