Default How a poor college kid builds his dream subaru

Hi everyone, my name is Jared Holland. I am 20 years old, I live in beautiful Southern California, I currently go to Community College, and I am an insurance broker.

I have been lurking on Nasioc for a little while now, obsessed with subarus and all they stand for. In October of 2012 I purchased my first subaru. Here she is:

2013 WRX DGM Hatch.

I sold this to get her:

2004 Audi S4

Being in college and barely making any money at the moment, I have large dreams for my car that might not come true for a while. One day I was in class bored and couldn't pay attention. I started drawing this:

I haven't drawn or doodled in years and it was a lot of fun, so I decided to continue it and make it look nice. I guess I felt it was my way of making my dream car come true! This is what I got after tracing it and making it cleaner:

What I want to do now is draw several different views of the car, including the engine bay and interior. I see it as a way to "map out" what I want my car to look like at some point.

Future mod plans (And I guess drawing plans!) include:

Wheels/Suspension:

BC BR Coilovers
Work Emotion 11R (Matte Black or Hyper Silver, still don't know which direction I want to go)
Whiteline front and rear sway bars
Endlinks (brand? idk)
Kart Boy Shifter Bushings
Brembos (4 pot, 2 pot) Red w/black logo

Exterior:

HID Retrofit (maybe)
Rally Armor mud flaps (red logo)
Debadge (Done!! Cheap )
Mini antenna
Tint 35% front 20% rear (Done!! Thank you gf!)
IAG Performance Tail light overlays (soon!!)
STI Lip
STI Side Skirts

Interior:

WC Lathe Werks knob
Wrap the panels up (maybe)
D shaped steering wheel (maybe)
Prosport gauge pod

Engine:

Cobb AP
Invidia DP
Invidia Q300
Perrin Intake (maybe)
TGV delete
Grimmspeed EBCS
Deatschworks DW65c Fuel Pump
EL Headers (maybe)
Possibly new fuel injectors/rails.

My view is, if I blow the engine or turbo with these mods, it's a great excuse to upgrade....

So there it is. I want to try and incorporate all of these things in my drawings first so that I can sort of see what it will feel like. That way, when I get to actually doing these mods, I will go in with confidence.

Would love to hear everybody's criticisms. That's why I'm here.

You can't bet that broke if you own a new 2013 wrx! When I was in college I was driving a 1997 legacy wagon I bought with my tax return. I'm only hating cuz I'm completely jealous Congrats on the purchase and good luck!

Yeah, no offense but I don't think being a broke college student constitutes being able to afford a brand new WRX..... I've been working all my life saving for college and I am still broke driving a 2002 Cavalier. Good luck anyways.

x2 LOL @ "poor college kid" but had a B6 S4. My other half dabbles in the Euro realm, so I know those platforms pretty well. Congrats on the new ride, and just keep an open mind. Your list will change multiple times. Enjoy the ride!

when i think of poor college student i think 91 accord with mismatched tires.

I'm assuming the S4 was a gift, and the WRX has payments? a slippery slope at that age
(not hating, just seen friends do the same thing)

enjoy the warranty before the mods. MY11 is practically stock (except exhaust) and I still love it the same.

I bought the S4 from my dad after saving money as a valet in SB. I guess my advantage was that he gave me a decent price. I babied that thing and drove it so much! It really was awesome until I realized it was probably going to start costing me a fortune to maintain.

So, I sold it, put the money (plus more money I had saved up) down on my WRX and my interest rate is less than 2%. I am making very low and affordable monthly payments and it will be paid off in a couple years! My goal is to build my credit enough to be able to get a home loan in a couple of years. That is why this was the perfect purchase. Not so slippery.

My deal with being "poor" is that I currently do not make much money, but I am starting to sell a lot of commercial insurance with my dad and know that I'll be able to afford more in the future. I do have a tendency to save a lot too because I'm scared of being "broke."

If it makes anyone feel better, I drove a 93 lexus SC300 for about a year before I owned the S4. Great car.

Not that you have to defend yourself, but Lexus -> Audi -> new car isn't a great argument in this case.

You have good head on your shoulders, no one should be hating.

SoCal is very affluent. I might be a little biased but I'll try not to be!

Thanks, and of course!

It really is!! I love the 08. One of my buddies from high school had a white one and I always loved it.

Congrats on the new car!!!! An excellent choice I must say and I like the mod goals as well. The best first mods are tint and mudflaps, or at least I thought so haha!

As a 25 yr old I applaud your decision to sell the audi, I bought by dad's 1999 A4 1.8T for $10K back in high school and then sold it the first year I was in college to save & not be rapped by repair costs. Those damn german cars, so clean, so nice, so expensive to maintain haha!

Oh and don't mind the haters, people troll with nothing better to do than talk crap and argue over the use of one or two words. They are better off with the rest of the nutcases arguing in the comment section on YouTube. Ruins the spirit most people have when on NASIOC: a common interest in Subies!!!

I have to say, with poor college kid in the title, I got excited to see mods done on a budget. I love seeing clean budget builds because it gives me and others affordable ideas. Then i see a 2013 wrx. Confused, I keep scrolling, to see you traded in an S4?!?

Sorry man, but those words you use...they do not mean, what you think they mean.

In other words. You're not broke, not even close. You're a 20 year old living in California and driving a 2013 WRX.

On the other hand, congrats on the car and good luck with your goals! Also, don't take the above negatively, I'm just pointing out that you are grossly misinformed of your current financial status .
