bad idea to not use a shield or not wrap it.....it gets to 1600*F and your power steering lines are pretty close as is that cam cover

one of the dumbest things i see is n0000bs not thinking about things like this

nobody thinks anymore

had to buy both lowersides heat shield( the sandwiches type that bolt where the manifold bolts to the head)... the prvious owner had the bright idea to drive around without the plastic shield underneath.they rusted pretty good and fell..

the uppie shield is still there but loose and doesn't have much meal left to bolt on anything... it looks to be a pita to insall a new shield without removing the uppipe..

The stock UP heat shield is welded on. The only way to get it off when the welds break is to cut/destroy the heat shield. You cannot buy a replacement heat shield without buying a new UP from the factory.

Nearly every aftermarket UP has no heat shield and only one or two can be purchased with a coating. I am pretty sure that a vast majority of the people running an aftermarket UP have no wrap/coating on it. Running the stock one without the crappy heatshield would be no different then an aftermarket UP.

Now, it is a very good idea to have some sort of heat shielding. For the UP, I believe that coating it is the best option due to the fire risk associated with wrapping. Either one is better than neither one.

When my heat shield broke, I cut it off and wrapped the UP with some remanent exhaust wrap I had left over from a long time ago. I was not concerned about the fire risk becuase I knew it was temporary since I was about to buy Tomei headers and send them to SwainTech. I just got those headers back from SwainTech, but I am currently on a business trip in Diego Garcia so I have not installed them yet.

DEI Titanium wrap is the way to go if you're so tempted to get that heat sheild off. Don't risk melting **** above/around the uppipe. I was going to take mine off because mine also snapped and was becoming quite noisy when I floored it... I opted to get a new EWG setup to get rid of the rattling sound and make more noise

This. Don't wrap things in the engine bay. Just coat it.

I'm not surprised but if you can coat something rather than wrap it I see that as a much better alternative. I wouldn't want any gas/oil/grease to get onto that wrap.

I prefer coating to wrapping simply due to the risk of oil fires.
