Default CEL vehicle speed sensor

Car - 93 STI RA

Problem - CEL is on with Vehicle Speed Sensor Code (33) putting ecu in
failsafe mode and can't rev past 4200.

Does anyone know where I can get a VSS?
Would there be any other areas that could cause this issue.
All vacuum lines were checked and gas tested. wiring is good from what I can see without rippin the dash apart

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanx

I thought I would add that the motor is almost completely stock... The only thing I have changed is the Ignition coils to the 2002+ coils

Remove the speed sensor/cable from the trans and use a hand held drill to spin the sensor/cable ( i think yours is a cable as old as it is) and see if the speedo moves. If it does you have a broken speedo gear in the transmission, if not then make sure the cable is not broken, also check the wiring from the speedo to the cluster. if you have a scope at your disposal. check the signal to the ecu from the speedo.

Very notorious on these older GC8s that the cable needs to be replaced.

I have also seen 2 cars where the speedo moves but the signal does not get to the ECU. In that case you might have to replace the dash clocks.

Hey thanx for the helpfull posts..
I'm out of town for a couple weeks. When I get home i'll have a look and see what I can do.

If needed - Does anyone know where I can find a Vehicle speed sensor for this car? (93 STI RA)

It's part of the speedometer assembly. I've not heard of anyone identifying the exact component of the assembly. Hence the recommendation to change the dash clocks if the cable and wiring check out fine.

Hey all..

So I'm home and had some time to check some stuff out.. I un-hooked speedo cable from tranny and spun it with a drill - odometer moves but speedometer does not. I didn't really have time to check anything else.. I may be able to check some wiring tomorrow

If odometer moves then the cable should be good right?

Yes maybe. Try using speedometer from a manual Impreza and go from there. Replace cable anyway.

replacing the actual speedo gauge inside the cluster is really easy, but it would likely be really tough to get the pn and then find a place to buy one. It's likely the same as any impreza of that period though, if you want to go used. never heard of one doing that

I did replace the part that is bolted to the tranny and on wich the cable attach twice. Took it from a 9x impreza outback can't remember the year out of the scrapyard. Mine is a 94 wrx.
