Sound of aluminum exhaust versus ss and Ti.

im looking to fabricate an exhuast for my 12 sedan wrx, and my two main reasons are sound and weight savings. How does and aluminum exhaust sound compared to a ss system or a ti system. i am currently considering ti and aluminum. i know ti is typically louder and higher pithced but idk about aluminum.

Yea, It kinda does. Also gives it a different exotic note I think... I love mine

Ej22 is a 2.0L correct? That sounded deeper than my 2.5L lol I'm planning on going straight pipe 3.5" to quad tips and want it very deep yet different from other Subarus. Aluminum may be the ticket seeing as titanium is hard to source, bend, AND weld lol not to mention much more expensive

Ej22 is a 2.2l and in that setup there is no cat, 1 borla muffler with dual side exit.

go to the vender announcements section and you'll find that STM is now making an all aluminum exhaust for the STI and it actually sounds really good!! They've got a link for a sound clip there to. The bonus is that they say it only weighs 9lbs!

If you want it to last long, fabricate one from TI.

Aluminum doesn't stand up to the heat well imo

I would do it in Ti in a heartbeat if it was so expensive, hard to weld, hard to bend, or hard to source

AL works fine for exhausts, as long as you dont expect it to last forever on a low car. Its a trade off. Ti and even 321 SS gets pricey quick and if you look at the dollar per pound of weight saving the AL starts to look pretty good.

Say you save 20 pounds or even 30 pounds with aluminum over stainless... Whats the gain? Stainless bends and welds wonderfully. Not to forget it lasts over time. If you want aluminum tubes, weight savings and to gain something get an aluminum(or carbon) drive shaft.

Aluminum won't last from the heat, Full-Race's R14 240 caught fire during the 2010 Modified Mag shootouts due to the aluminum exhaust failing, then melting everything else around it.

^^ very valid example. However most street driven cars don't get that much punishment. Also that video points to a PS leak being involved in the fire. Im not at all familiar with that car or the lay out but how much of the AL exhaust system is really in the engine bay? For example on a subaru I would never make even a DP out of AL. There is weight to be saved just buy running an AL axle back in the rear where its less exposed to heat and damage from bottoming out.

This is a 3" AL axle back I made, real pain and simple. Bolts up to a stainless center section. Great weight savings and much more muffled then a stainless straight pipe.
