Default Speed Channel officially done

http://www.motorsport.com/general/ne...-fox-sports-1/

As the article says, this was common knowledge but kinda sad to see it now official. Just what we need is another channel for stick and ball sports.
I know there's always a lot of Speed haters around, but they still had some racing on. Wonder where Grand Am, ALMS, etc. will end up? I guess I'll have to start using the torrents and internets for my racing fix again.

I was just catching the tail end of SPEED being good when they showed actual racing back in the early 2000's but I'm not really sad to see it go now. Such garbage programming. I wonder if ALMS will only be streamed on ESPN3 or the occasional race one NBC. At least the new BeIn Sports channel has WSBK now, and I bought the MotoGP video pass. F1 now on NBCSports. If BeIn would pick up V8 Supercars and a few other series it would be great. They had no commercials on the WSBK race, it was nice to watch HD racing with no interruptions.

I'm concerned about the sports car series. Where will Grand-Am be aired now? Forget about coverage of LeMans 24 and Daytona 24. Without any channel to broadcast the races, the sponsors are going to bail quickly. Just sucks for the future of Motorsports in the US.

Speed didn't have ALMS after the 2011 season. At the start of the '12 season ALMS was only ESPN3 with the few shortened recaps shown on NBC. This does suck for all of the other sports car/GT series, and the 24 hours. Hopefully they're currently broadcast online somewhere. Wonder where we'll get to see the new series (ALMS/Grand-Am joining) next year.

I remember when the channel started and they had all sorts of cool stuff. Anyone remember their commercials with the cop?

I remember when Speedvision was all about things that went fast. Live space shuttle launches, Two Wheel Tuesdays were all ****ing day, powerboat shows and racing, airplane shows and racing, plus all sorts of car racing as well as Motorsport Mondial.

I enjoyed watching Pinks. The things (station wagons, mini vans, so forth) people would run just to get that speed fix...

Waiting for the day when the Cable TV subscription model finally dies and we will be able to customize what we want to see. Petrol heads will suffer in this transition period.

Really is amazing to me that there is apparently minimal to nil profit in advertising for motorsports.

Yeah, I miss Motorsport Mondial.

Besides LeMans and GT racing (already mentioned further up in this thread), I've seen no word in any of the press releases about continuing coverage of WRC, MotoGP, Supercross, or AMA road Racing

Just because they change their name doesn't mean they won't broadcast the major race series, in the same way NBC plans to do on their Sports network. This is like getting upset that MTV doesn't play music videos; the programming has been changing for years, use other avenues to access what you want.

I'd imagine they'll keep it under the "sports" umbrella and air as per usual. I don't see them getting rid of all racing. Auto racing is a sport too.

In the end it probably won't change things. People who watch Speed for serious racing only watch/DVR the actual racing. People who watch the other BS programming don't watch the actual racing. It's a change to stuff neither side will really see the affect.

I do wish they'd dump everything but NASCAR and someone like Velocity would take up all the other racing, MotoGP, V8 Supercars, FIA GT1, WTCC, WRC, etc.

Talk about a "I can't believe it lasted this long" moment. In my opinion (and I work for a consultancy that tracks Cable Operators) bundling basically killed Speed. In the SF bay area Speed was only available on Xfinity as part of the Digital Premier Package. If you wanted Speed, but you didn't want HBO, Showtime, and about 100 other channels you are already watching on Amazon Prime, Netflix, Hulu and your buddies HBO Go account, you ended up paying roughly $100 more per month so you could watch F1.

What happened with Netflix and House of Cards is really interesting. I could see that Netflix, Amazon, Hulu, etc could pick up some of the more interesting races and make them available live or on demand on their services. Amazon is set up to charge you a pay-per-view fee.

Versus is also an interesting channel. The Tour de France has really helped them. I could see some of the more interesting races - like Lemans fitting their line-up.

I think they will still show major races they have contracts for (since FOX owns the contracts not "Speed")
This year they got the longer ALMS races back, Sebring, Petit, Laguna Seca, and they have the rights to Le Mans until something like 2021.
Though NASCAR they have all the rights to Grand AM and conti series and of course they still have MotoGP and WSB.
I think the only difference will be instead of shows like pinks and renecks vs imports there will be stick and ball show and maybe some of the NASCAR will go away.

Yeah. I meant LeMans not ALMS. Fixed post.

IF they keep Grand-Am (including Conti), SX, LeMans, and some other racing, and get rid of the "shows", that would actually not be too bad. I never watch any of the "shows" on speed. Well...except for Wind Tunnel.

I remember catching lawnmower racing right after SCCA Pro Rally coverage. Those were good times.

Versus died too. It is now MSNBCSport. That is where they will have F1 coverage.

It was hard enough finding a hotel with SpeedTV. Good luck trying to find one with MSNBCSport.

I don't think it'll have that much of an impact.
