Default newb exterior lighting question bugeye wagon

So I have a question about fixing my headlights.

I am pretty sure this is what I need, but just want to confirm.

I drive a '02 wrx wagon, and I normally just leave my lights on all the time since they shut off automatically. I noticed the other morning that my lights were not on when I got out of the car as it was warming up. I flashed the brights and they worked fine, but no dims.

All of my fuses had power to them under the hood, so I was a bit confused. Now, I work at a repair shop anyway, and I suggested my conundrum to a fellow employee who works with this kind of thing all the time. He said it sounds like I have a bad dimmer switch (the multifunction stalk on the left side of the steering column.)

I checked at my local parts store, and they can get one the next day which to me suggests that it may not be a common problem, but one that is common enough to have parts on hand for closeby.

Has anyone else had this problem, and if so, what was your fix?

Thank you very much!

p.s. I briefly searched "dims don't work, headlights don't work, bugeye headlights don't work," and didn't come up with anything.

Yeah, I'm not THAT new to the car. The parking brake was definitely off, Just tried it again to verify.

Well, this was completely strange. I had simply assumed that it couldn't be bulbs burnt out because both of them burned out at the same time, and they are only about a year old. However, I was wrong. Turns out that it was just the bulbs burnt out, but there has to be some underlying problem. I'll do some more digging, and hopefully this doesn't happen again!

Thanks for the replies though, I'm glad you guys at least tried!

do you have PIAA bulbs? they last about a year, and though I've never had them wear out at the same time, it's typically within 1-2 wks of each other. I don't use them anymore, way over priced for crappy lighting.

Yep, Sylvania Silverstars have about the same life span as well. The last time I bought them, they both went out at exactly the same time. Turned on my headlights at 4am before driving to Maine, they both blew within 2 seconds of each other.

Any bulbs that have a colored coating, like Silverstars and PIAA will only last about a year in my experience. Not to mention the fact that they give the illusion of being brighter, while actually producing less light.

I hate silverstars, and will put anything but them in.

I had phillips bulbs in, same wattage as the stock bulbs, but they both blew simultaneously. Craziness.

I put in whatever it is that my local napa sells. Eiko or something? I forget honestly. But they seems just as good as the phillips I had before.
