you sir have made a big mistake. BMW are one of the most expensive cars to maintain. even changing breaks will make you wanna cry (50 - 100 $$ just for the stupid sensors). also get used to getting your car checked for random lights and CEL. i owned 5 bmw 328i 335i 470il m3 740i

All German cars have a high cost of ownership. My wife bought a used 08 535 two years ago. The normal maintenance costs have been high with me doing the work and getting parts at wholesale. Not any major reliability issues, but you pay for the pleasure of driving a BMW.

You know what parts needs to be replaced durning normal usage. Good Luck.

Just wait until the wastegate arm breaks lol or high pressure fuel pump, fuel injectors also go bad, valve covers and oil filter housing like to leak a lot as well. How do I know this? I'm a BMW tech and have been working on the for 3 years

Do not get me wrong, I love BMW's especially the M cars. The problem is when they go out of warranty and the free service.

I chose to buy a STI because the overall cost of ownership costs are very low and a DYI can maintain the car with help from NASA.

Most BMW owners get into them knowing the maintenance costs, it really isnt an issue for the people who love em, ill pay extra all day long... its the ultimate driving machine

Happens all the time......

Also the aluminum head bolts have been breaking off and screwing up timing chains.....
Also the aluminum motor mounts bolts have been breaking...

typical repair estimate of a 06 3 series. Minus out the expensive alternator and its still pretty pricey.

The x35 turbo versions are even more expensive.

They are either twin turbo or single turbo with direct injection. These are known for high pressure fuel pump failures, injectors needing replacement, wastegate sticking/failures, and various sensors. As a package BMW has done an excellent job. Long term and cost of ownership not so good unless you are commuted to pay.

I went 2005 sti to BMW 330i performance was just OK. The BMW didn't give me the feedback required. My friend allowed me to drive his 08 335i faster but boring. Rawness 100% gone. You will become another badge in the BMW.

I picked up a car on Saturday....

I'm going to be driving this until I find my next car. I needed something to get me through the next few weeks because I'll be in New Zealand at the end of the month and I just don't have the time to properly car shop right now. This '89 Prelude is actually a ton of fun - 5-speed, absolute MINT interior, everything is power (and works!), it has all-wheel steering, and it's a perfect commuter car for now! The odometer doesn't work but when it quit it had 137k miles, but the way it looks and drives, it has to have somewhere close to that in actual miles. Talk about a big difference from my STi, but it'll do for now, and I only paid $1400 including TT&L.

I test drove an 05 CTS-V on Saturday and I fell in love with it, but the dealer as asking too much for the mileage ($17.8k for 77k miles) and the paint wasn't in the best condition. My plan is to shop around for a low mileage CTS-V and I've increased my budget a bit because my income has just increased by a fair amount. I've found a few good deals out of State so when I get back from NZ I'm going to get serious about finding one.

Those are pretty cool, especially the 2nd one. If I had time and room for a project, an old BMW would be high on my list of project cars, but these days I do nothing but work so no toys for me right now.

Not suggesting, just sharing my experience...

I "grew up" when I got married last April (when I say "grew up" meaning changing cars and acquiring a ring, but remaining entirely immature). I sold my WRX in favor of buying a house and finding a more practical car for my profession and life in general. Selling the WRX was probably the most bittersweet task I've ever accomplished.

Being an outside salesman and covering the entire DFW metroplex and surrounding areas, lets just say I drive A LOT. Unable to stay away from turbo AWD, I picked up a 08' FXT and haven't really looked back since then. I DO miss the WRX from time to time because of it's nimbleness compared to the FXT, but I have pretty much moved forward.

To put it in perspective, I went to the Dallas auto show last night and sat in 30+ cars. After last night I have a new found appreciation for the 05-08 5mt XT's duality (The new XT is SO nice BTW). I truly feel there are little to no cars on the road that can excel in a multitude of driving/cargo demands. The FXT has the platform/capability to handle on rails while remaining smooth and civil, ability to be stupid fast and still be drivable for a daily and carry passengers while holding tons of cargo. I've fit an 8 foot ladder in my FXT with the hatch closed! Anyways, good luck in your car buying endeavor and props to the Lude, I owned one before my WRX
