Too many of you agree with me (obviously, the peanut gallery of liar liars, Subaru salespeople, and post-purchase rationalizers).

Can't you see that stevehnm is right that a CVT impreza is totally incapable of meeting EPA mpg estimates at the highway speeds the EPA test simulates -- despite all evidence to the contrary (hint, the speed that he considers "slow beyond reason", approx. 65mph)?

But then there is this?

I sure hope he mentioned this in his complaint to the EPA about the Impreza's dismal fuel economy in real world driving...at long last I think Stevenhnm has joined the peanut gallery!

2012 ordered from the factory. I'm sure if you needed the reprogram you would have received notification from SOA. I got Emails and snail mail about it, was just lethargic in getting it done. I don't like anyone touching my cars but me haha.

Amazing how half-witted your spins are.

Did you mean "Two"? I'm not sure who all here gets 36 mpg at over 68 mpg - and not by the intrument panel which generally starts out reading high and drops some, but stays high no matter how long it's driven. The '13's are not even adjustable to fix that - curious, that, especially since most everybody here has the same error... Not to say there is not a minority who can, but there are too many complaints, and too much real data out there - as opposed to a few saying they "can".

Default seriously?

Got an XV(CVT) a few months ago, easily get 31 mpg on highway at sea level. I do drive the speed limit(maybe a little over) and I did change the oil to Subaru synthetic(let's not start that discussion here) and I have a remote start. In town I get about 24 driving normally. I do have an STi that doesn't get great mileage but maybe helps me "get my ya-yas out"(Rolling Stones). I'm not in a rush to get to work or take my dog to the park when driving the XV, and I use the remote start a lot(warm up in winter for me, cool down in summer for dog)and am pleased it still produces those numbers.
Didn't read every page of this thread but assume someone has mentioned that very few cars produce comparable mpg to what is actually listed on sticker. That's why I'm so pleased with the XV numbers. Also have a 08 WRX that when I fuel up and hit the highway immediately averages 27 mpg, also at sea level and very slight hills(up and down).
I know the XV is a little different but only in ways that decrease mpg. The 5spd Impreza is quicker than the CVT, but I believe the CVT XV is a little peppier than the 5spd XV. IMO, so who cares, whatever, I'm not here

Consumer Reports has added a new car that gets 35 mpg in their test results, the Chevrolet Malibu. It's rated according to the manufacturer's testing at 30 mpg. Kicking out the other car, again, that is tested on the same equipment as the Impreza (the Legacy) so is therefore suspect raises the average of the other cars from 29.73 to 29.75, however it lowers the Standard Deviation from 1.191 to 1.138, meaning we have passed a magical threshold in how far out the Impreza, that Subaru rated at 36 mpg, is from the other vehicles...

Acura TL 29
Acura TSX 30
Audi A4 29
Chevrolet Malibu 30
Dodge Avenger 31
Ford Mustang 29
Lexus ES 31
Mazda MX-5 Miata 28
Nissan Altima 31
Volkswagen CC 31
Volvo C30 28
Volvo S60 30

Mean 29.75
Standard Deviation 1.138180366

I just did a 700+ mile road trip with about 1,000lb more weight in the car and on top of my roof rack with a decent amount of up hill driving

I got 28mpg freeway
With the ac on
And driving about 70mph

Throw a rack and 1,000 lbs extra on a corolla uphill with A/C and 70 mph and it'll get 55 mpg. Its like the harder you drive it, the better it gets. It's quite something to see really...... Or so were told.

So, what are you told now? Are you really joining the dufi?

Amazing how 5 speed owners know all about the CVT. We don't even have to ask them, they just voluntarily spew.

So one would think, about 5 speed owners anyway. You guys continually show your idiocy by talking about CVT's without even owning one.

Hmmm. You must not be much of an engineer. Why would I trade in my Impreza for a Malibu EPA rated at 30 mpg highway that gets the same highway mpg as my (supposed 36 mpg) Impreza?

Good one Steve...not really but well, can't expect much from you!

You keep talking about how other cars performed so much better based on your favorite magazine but you do not have the balls to put your money were your mouth is (or keyboard). So keep crying about it, fantasized about other cars and be miserable.

Last laugh belongs to us, 'cause your spreadsheets based upon Consumer Reports are not going to get you any remediation from Subaru, or the recognition you crave from the EPA.

How do I know this, despite not owning Subaru, or the EPA? (well, in the interest of full disclosure, I am actually 'part owner' of the EPA)

Because the CVT Impreza can achieve better than the EPA mpg's when driven in a manner that you choose not to drive it, aka ~60-65 mph. Many of the people you are trying to convince otherwise drive their CVT's on the highway and see better than EPA driving the car up to 70mph. That's too slow for you, though...

So, no fraud, the Impreza was tested as required by the EPA, and therefore no money for your complaint or your time (which is apparently too valuable to drive slow, but cheap enough to spam NASIOC with argumentum ad hominem...ad nauseum).

I did a trip last weekend, 95% highway, speeds 60-65mph, some little hills, 30% of it fully loaded. I only averaged 34.3 running 91 e0, but I'm sure the cvt would have kicked my butt in the mpg department based upon others reports at the same speeds
