Talking ATTN: Link and Tec Users (and UTec Testers)

I've been working with fellow i-clubb'er wackie on creating a website for hosting custom maps. If you would like to help us out we could really use your custom maps. Anyone that would be interested, please email me and attach your maps along with a description of the mods the map is for. We're not quite ready to release the new site yet, but will be early next week hopefully. I figured it's about time everyone had a place to go to discuss ECU enhancements and share their maps. The UTec is going to be included too, but obviously there aren't too many maps out there for it quite yet. Anyways, if you'd like to help us get this started let me know.

or email JD at: wackie@elite.net (probably better to email him this weekend, I'll be out on business until monday)

Cool

Yeah, what he said.

If you send us any maps, please provide a complete list of modifications, estimated margin of safety (obviously only pertains to your vehicle), type of gas used, etc. Basically include anything you'd want to know when downloading a MAP from the internet. We're categorizing things to make it easier to find.

We're also making a section for developers. If anyone else (like myself) is developing a GUI or other custom software for any of the ECU products, we'd be glad to link to you.

There will be an active forum on the site, but we're not trying to steal anyone away from our precious I-Club.

For fine tuning purposes yes... but for those using similar mods it provides a good base level of tuning. If you've got the exact same modifications on the car, there's no reason you can't take someone elses map and tune it up fairly easily accounting for elevation, temp, engine quirks, etc.

Given, it will make more sense for the UTec users because it's not a full standalone. Which is actually what we're really going to be going for, but I thought I would at least see if the standalone guys would be willing to help out a bit.

Edited for bad spelling mistakes made because I've spent all day at work... bleh

Al, are you speaking from personal experience?

crazyhorse,
Since i-Club no longer allows .zip file attachments, your site could fill a large void. Will it be designed to exchange and/or host Subaru-related stuff other than .csv (comma separated variable) files?

Right now it's set up to allow you to upload your files in any format. We set a cap of about 250KB or so, which is actually a LOT larger than any map for any ECU I've ever seen. It's strictly ECU tuning focused though. We're not trying to compete with i-club by any means, just going to give everyone a more specific forum for tuning purposes. Should be ready to go by next week, mostly ready now.. just wanted to get a few things up there before we actually announced it. (My UTec will be here Fri. next week.. woohoo)

I think my UTEC should be arriving about the same time as yours, god willing. I won't be stingy with the maps, but obviously my knowledge is still limited. Reading about it on the TSX site and playing with it are two different things. What Al said does make sense, but I'm game. Tit for tat, right?

I fully plan on making any maps I come up with available as I build the car up. Never know when someone might decide to go the same route as you.

It lives! ; )

Thumbs up UTEC maps

Great idea....My UTEC should be here next Fri., as well. My tune should be a headache for a little while, simply because of the turbo (one-off job). Please PM me with the site info.

Just an idea. Is it posible to upload a data log of the maps so other people can see what the car is doing before down loading the map?

Actually... I like that idea. Thanks for the input, I'll talk to JD and try to get it added to the upload script. Shouldn't be too hard I wouldn't think. Worst case, we have 2 areas.. one for datalogs and one for the actual map and you just link to the datalog in your description of the map. I'm pretty sure we can get them together though.

Not quite true... I would use another persons map in an instant if I didn't have a tune of my own - of course it'd be for base tuning.

To everyone out there - I hope you realize that you'd be kidding yourself if you were to think that it'd just plop right in and work just like it did on someone else's car. It'll be similar, but it won't be the same. Even if they are the same car, same mods, same driving style, there will always be tolerance differences in the motor and mods, altitude differences, minor electronic variances, etc.

Exactly my feelings on the matter. This site will be for those of you that want to get a map in there that you can tweak for perfection. Also, if you don't want to DL maps we're going to promote discussions about ECU tuning and hope to add useful information for tuners in the near future. It's not designed to be just a download site. If any experienced tuners would like to help us get some content out and get an article published online, please let me know. Any useful information is welcomed!

Don't foget, tuners have been doing mail-order Unichip tuning for a while now. This would be no different except the end user would be able to tweak it a bit to suit their car. I think its a great idea. Keep up the good work guys.

Actually, I've been slowly working on an ECU Comparison FAQ for the i-Club here and as soon as I get it done, Nick has said that he will open an all-ECU forum for us to discuss and swap maps (cause they're usually small enough to zip up and attach to posts easily).

I would be willing to put my Maps up but I hope there is a big disclaimer on the site that lets people know that these are not generic maps. FWIW, TurboXS is dedicating a portion of their site to Maps and software versions. To reiterate what 8complex said, (and kinda what Al meant to say ) using someone elses's map that has been dyno tuned is a risky endeavor. A nice forum on how to make a proper map for your own vehicle by itself would be very beneficial. As long as you have the basics down, really, it's not that tough. The ECU handles all the sticky stuff, idle, emissions, ETC. Timing, fuel, boost are pretty trivial if you have a general idea on how the EJ20 takes to these different parameters. My .03 pence...

While I appreciate the fact that i-club may soon have an ECU forum open, it is always nice to have a site dedicated to strictly ECU tuning and having an easily used upload/download system that is a lil more friendly than just a post. By no means do I intend to compete with i-club though, in fact while building content I've decided to link news to some of the threads here. It's just nice to have a site where you don't have to worry too much about sorting through a bunch of threads to get to the information you need.

The site does have a nice disclaimer stating that if you blow up your engine.. it's your fault.. Of course it's a lil more subtle than that.. but the wording is basically there.

well I just got done plugging a 9volt batter to my UTEC and building a fairly safe MAP based map right here at my desk in about 5 minutes. This came from my own PERSONAL understanding of my vehicle, it's fueling characteristics, etc. This is radically different then what I've seen on other's cars, so it should NOT be used in any way shape or form. But for theoretical discussion (the term I'm going to be using) it's great for people to understand what should work, and how.

I'll have a write up and pics on my site soon enough.
