So, engine plans are starting to be developed as everything else is pretty much completed on the Miata. Now, I most likely won't take anyone's advice but I am just looking at what Jesus, or you fellows would do. Budget not important so the choices are as follows:
1. ITB's - Maruha...advantage local guy who does great work, keeps weight light and easy to keep cool and sounds rad...great throttle response. 2. Turbo Kit - good cheap power... 3. supercharger - good power increase...nice whistle etc 4. LS3 Conversion - brah brah brah brah....out of a miata....200 lbs heavier than other options...car currently weighs 2000lbs. ITB, Turbo and Supercharger would all be with a built 1.8L motor. Discuss...diss and ...

ahaha on a serious note: that vid on youtube showing the maruha miata keeping up with a nsx is sick. so id definitely go in that direction since its local as well. and as you said budget is not important. |

For #1, did you talk to Chikara Motors? From my horrible memory, they are the Maruha guys locally. Plus, they did great work with my S/C.
For #2, are you going custom or with a pre-kit such as Flyin Miata? I never drove one but I did quite a bit of reading on it and should be good, especially on the 1.8. For what I remember, the GT2554R can be used on the FM turbo kit which makes it fun. For #3, that's what I did with a 1.8L. I got a BRP MP62 and it was definitely fun. I can't even count with two hands the number of times I accidentally loss control of the back-end...it was a terrifying but fun ride. For #4, I think the biggest issue is weight distribution being affected. I'd go with turbo or S/C on the Miata because they are fun and can be sourced at a a VERY reasonable price. The Chikara guys, from when I had my Miata, I believe they had a guy running ITB's. But $/hp ratio wise...I'd go T or S/C. There is a wealth of information though on the intraweb about these options. |

I am not aware of whether or not this has done before. He said budget is not important so maybe he can be the first? The same has been done on a AE86 so I can't think of why it can't be done on a miata.
Mazda has a history of taking it from other manufacturers when it comes to engine... ![]() Edit: Here, someone has done it. http://forum.miata.net/vb/showthread.php?t=239739 |

1. Yes, Ovean has already done a lot of work on the car and would do options 1-3.
2. I would take Ocean's advice on which kit to use, or if we build one. 3. Agree although the actual weight gain on my car would be about 140lbs in the front and 70 in the rear....but the front hasn't really been lightened whereas the rear has. |

When I said budget isn't important I just meant that I can do all four options within my budget so you don't need to ask...and I am only interested in those four options. I am leaning between 1 and 4 which are kind of opposite sides of the spectrum...just want to see what y'all would do. Turbo and supercharger still very possible but I like 1 and 4 the best.

you'll enjoy going ITBs.. i wouldnt bother with a supercharger, turbo kit, or the LS swap. just personal preference with no other reason than that.
i've done a lapping day w/ the blue miata.. sounds and goes like stink! |

Exactly the type of response I'm looking for, thanks. Primary duty for this car will be track days with the odd fair weather cruise. Budget for the ITB's is far shipper and I'd be happy giving Ocean the biz.

Personally I'd throw in the LS3 and 50lbs of lead on the bottom of the trunk.

I'd just stick my dog back there in that case...I'm not overly worried about the weight as I still think it would be gobs of fun to drive and the big honkin' wing I'm going to have in the back will make up for it....or I'll toss my dog in the trunk.

I've seen it but not at the track, we were going to do a track day in Seattle last year but everyone bailed as the weather forecast was terrible. I think I will most likely go ITB and maybe buy a second Miata and LS3 it down the road.

For pics of the car. Yes, slow, I had seen that one. I really like Damon's car but there is this gut feeling I get when I ponder having a big fat LS3 burbling under the hood. Long term and track day fun I think the ITB's will get me, and being able to get the work done locally by a good guy who's work I have seen in person. |
