Oh, good. I mean I'd pay like $8 a month for it, but... not pay-for-planes model like Rise of Flight is (and the new IL-2 is gonna be). I'll save my cash for real sims.
they may have improved it.
I do fine with a keyboard+mouse. usually in top 5.

My first time playing, I didn't do so hot. Every single time after that, I was either the top or second from top on the scoreboard.

It was literally like shooting twitching fish in a barrel.

Its not intense like BF3, but its pretty addicting when you try to level up and get new planes.

Should we start a user list?

I've been playing this for a couple months and just use the level 0-3 planes, it is a whole lot of fun and I have no desire to progress further up the tech tree. So I'm sitting on eagles and levels without using them. The gameplay is enough for me, I don't want to get into some pressured arms race.

Having that starter Japanese bomber unleash the rear 20mm on noobs flying bi-planes never gets old. It is expensive to repair/replace though.

With points into the gunner crew and reload times, combined with using the "experienced crew" bonuses, the rear turrets are monsters. The dual 7.7's on the back of my Blenheim rip right through guys trying to chase me down. Can't wait to get some points into the Beaufort too, the .50 on that beast is even more deadly.

I have a pair of Catalinas with fully leveled up gunners. They don't shoot too many planes down, but it takes a couple of rammers to take them down.

...I feel like such an idiot sometimes. Finally figured out how to repair from the airfields. I had landed many times before and sat there for what felt like ages while nothing happened, then eventually got strafed and died.

Turns out I just need to wait a little longer. Go figure.

Looking at the "free repair" repair time in the hangar, the Lancaster takes seven days. Even if that's knocked down to one day with a fully upgraded crew, that's still insanely long.

There ARE higher paying missions as you level up, right? If not, I'm going to drop my dream of the top-tier stuff right now.

When was the last time you played?

A lot of pre-patch players are up in arms now due to a lot of changes.

Yeah, played a round on the US server - having a ~50ms ping is so much better than the 200-400 I was getting on the other ones.

Probably like a month ago?

Holy crap this game is difficult with a joystick. I play for about two hours and only took out two planes and a handful of vehicles. Fun though. My pings weren't bad at all. Averaged in the 70's. Game seemed to run smoothly.

I may or may not bother to try this game out...

...however, it got me thinking about joysticks. I've got an old F-22/TQS setup from back when I used to flightsim a lot (many hours playing Jane's F-15 and EF2000). But I know that beast isn't going to be working without a lot of effort (gameport + keyboard programming + DOS drivers = win 7 no bueno).

So I looked into getting my old MS Sidewinder 3D Pro (the Mechwarrior II uber-stick) up and running. Turns out it doesn't work well, even with the 8-stick gameport to USB adapter I've got. So I ordered up a Teensy 2.0 USB board to build a Sidewinder specific USB converter. Apparently this is the way to get all nostalgic when playing Decent on modern PCs, since the retro descent players were the guys to come up with the converter.

I swear, the tangents OT sends me down sometimes...

That sounds like a lot of work to get it going Sperry. However, I am sure it will be fun.

I didn't have much luck playing last night. I am not sure if it was the good pings of the US server, but I was getting taking out much quicker than pre-patch in almost all of my planes.

I miss the Sidewinder 3D Pro. I used that for many, many years with MW2/MW3/MW4. It's impossible to compete in "Full Real Battles" without a joystick, as the mouse control when forced in the cockpit view with no stability...yeah, it's rough.

Also, it seems that I've become a huge target out there now. More often than not, I can only get one bombing run in before 6-8 people get on my ass and just murder me. My team doesn't provide cover at all.

Going to move up to the attack aircraft with 4x20mm cannons sometime soon, about halfway there to level 4 -> 5 British.

a lot of the planes changed.
I agree, I have been getting one hit quite a bit more often post-patch.

I'll be playing tonight hopefully. I just freaking threw away my old ass joystick, too. How hard is it to setup a xbox controller?

I was looking for a reason to break out the ol' Force Feedback Sidewinder joystick. We'll see how rusty I am behind the controls.

I've been playing this game for the last few weeks. I really like it.

Have the following:
US @ 9
Germans @ 7
UK @ 5
Ruskies @ 4
Japan @ 0

Obviously I play mainly US and Germans in Arcade mode. I don't like the latest changes that make it impossible to do a dive bomb in surface bombers (bombers that store bombs in the bomb bays not on the wings/externally). I get the realism factor but then you LOSE the realism in the game when you introduce all these ammo packages that make it like you are shooting plasma beams at enemy planes. Nothing was wrong with gun damage before the new ammo options but now you can be very dangerous in a plane that would normally be crappy (i.e. the bi-planes with 2 small MGs now act like you are blasting cannons at people).

Like it or not, this game is definitely made to be Mouse + Keyboard controlled unless you have a really nice flightstick setup. If you do go flightstick you better be damned good with your rudder control because guys flying with mouse will have a an aiming advantage on you because they can basically aim like they were playing an FPS. However, the flightstick guys are able to maneuver MUCH better if they are good pilots. I have seen a dude in a Spitfire evade 5 other guys' firing at him from his 6 just because of the maneuvers he could pull off. He died eventually but it took about 6-7 minutes for those guys to take him out and his teammates took a couple of them out before they finished him.
