Default Moving from CA to Norfolk, VA

How's it going everyone? Long story short I'm in the military and they are moving me to Norfolk, VA. So I'm actually getting my car ready to make the drive over there. Not sure if it's smart to keep my car registered in CA, plus I wouldn't know how too. So my option right now is to register it in VA. My only concern is the inspections I have to deal with when trying to register my car. On the plus side I heard that you guys don't do Smog emissions like CA does.

I have a 2011 WRX w/ Cobb AP, catted DP, Invidia Q300 w/o resonator, AEM intake, Racerx Eng. FMIC, forge BPV, koyo radiator, feal coilovers, and other suspension parts. Currently I have only 1 cat located on the DP. Will I be needing to weld a second cat knowing that the car came originally with 2 cats? Or should I be fine with just that single cat ?

Is there anything else I should know that I should take care of to have me pass ?

Thanks

Do you have a home state that doesn't do inspections? If not, VA won't be as bad as CA, but some inspectors are more mod friendly than others. Hit up the Hampton Roads Subaru group on FB for more info. Also a good source for meats and other nonsense.

People get denied regularly because of spam and what not. So if you didn't have affiliations with people on the east coast(or in HR area in general) already then 9/10 they will delete the request.

Im not an admin but I'm sure someone here will see it and let the group know.

In Norfolk (what we call Hampton Roads here) there only needs to be one cat. Its a visual inspection, not a sniffer and all they care about is that all your lights work and your tires and brakes are fine. No need to worry. You WILL have to change over to VA tags/inspection though, so if a cop nabs you before you have done so, memorize the following phrase, "Sorry officer, I just got stationed here from California 4 days ago". Once your Cali plates are done, swap over.

We have weekly small meets every Saturday and are pretty active on the faceplace with many Navy dorks in the fold, so if you need any advice, holler at me here or on the faceplace as I know every Subaru dork within 500 miles.

As someone else already said, what's your home of record, and why don't you just keep your car registered there? My cars are all registered in CT, my home of record; I haven't been stationed in CT since 2002. Since then I've been to HI, MD, RI, WA, and VA, and have kept the CT registrations. The last time one of my three cars was inspected was when I bought my CTS-V used in 2007, and I don't remember the last time I did an emissions test (since that requirement gets waived for active duty CT residents stationed out of state). My registration renewal fees are also waived, and my home town waives the property taxes.

Check your home of record's policies for military stationed out of state - you might find that it's best to register your car there.

Yeah I was about to say I've had NC plates for my entire 7 year stay in VA Beach. Just ask questions to make sure, cause VA property tax sucks...

Did you get on the FB page yet? I haven't been on NASIOC in like a year. If you're not on the page yet, whats your FB name so I can make sure you're added?

Not sure how the roads are where you're coming from, but Norfolk roads are terrible.....just a heads up. Not good if your lowered.
