Default Bad Wastegate?

Alrighty guys before anything I'd like to point out that I have done alot of looking and cannot come up with a solution. My Wastegate is bad (i think) because i read one post about how if you can easily pull on the accuator arm then it's likely junk. Not to mention adjusting the accuator arm doesn't do anything to help it. The symptoms are the turbo will hold pressure perfectly fine during normal applications but as soon as you open up the throttle and get into the higher rpms the boost with fluctuate between about .08-.13 MPA on the standard boost gauge (which i have heard alot about being inaccurate) and it also feels as if im having a powerloss when i hit the higher RPMs due to this. There is no leaks in the vac lines that i have detected but like i said i can pull on the accuator arm to the waste gate and move it easily. My question from this point is what to do to fix this? External waste gate? i cant seem to find any stock ones.. nor am i sure of what exact turbo i am dealing with because it is an 03 WRX with the turbo off of an 06. Any and all help is appreciated because i am a new subie owner

Can you log? That would help greatly.

Oh boy. You have a lot of reading to do sir. I don't mean to pick on you... we all started some where. But really- Search and do some reading. And for gods sake don't do anything under the hood until you procure a tuner and a way to log.

And a little hint: If your vehicle doesn't have an OBDII port it is likely eligible for collector plates.
This seams a simple wastegate problem. I don't know what turbo is on your car but if it its off a 06, you need to check the vacuum pipes from the high pressure end of the turbo to the wastegate, there should be a restrictor pill in it which has a 0.9mm hole in it. Please check.

Cheers

There's absolutely no way to know its a waste gate problem from the info provided. And I don't think the OP has the background knowledge to be able to provide such info here yet. As such I suggest he enlist the help of a local guru or tuner who can physically diagnose the car and guide him through. Not some random nasioc newb (me) who will only send him in ten different directions if I try to say what I think it is based on the very limited info provided here.

Sorry this isn't more sugar coated.

All cars, 1996 and newer are required to have OBDII.

Now, find you local subies and start meeting with them. Casual conversation will teach you a lot. My point though is, one of those guys should have an accessport or tactrix they can let you use and show you how to run a log.

Logging is an excellent diagnostic tool, and imho, everyone should do it from time to time and know how to spot issues in them as well.

Well if it helps I do have a personal guru of my own he's been working as a mechanic on everything for over 15 years right now he's working for cummins and he's helped me a lot through the problems I have had but I could probably get some logging stuff from him and get it done if necessary because it is kind of a drive to see him now lol

Also just a tidbid what kind of information do you need to diagnose this because I can get about anything needed since you guys say its so little of information and vague? And if I do log what am I looking for? Misfires? Because I know that is not the case and I do not have any check engine lights currently or have ever been on. And the turbo is just the stock model off of an 06 wrx so I think it's still the TD 04? By all means correct me if I am wrong on anything I am a newb to subies but I know a great deal in general (not turbos though lol but slowly learning it all)

Yes it is still a td04, to log look into getting taxtrex cable and u will need a laptop. another alternative is to buy a Cobb access port if you plan on doing performance modifications in the future.

I woukd like to see your wastegate duty cycles. That of course requires logging though. Ask on your regional/chapter forum for anyone willing to bring their kit over (or you go to them,) and help you get a log done. It's quick and easy, a 6 pack of beer should cover it. ;p

Well update.. I'm probably going to be ordering an AccessPort here tomorrow maybe. But thats dependent on the fact of what the hell im reading right now. I found the OBD2 port and plugged in my personal obd2 and ran the torque app on my phone. and well its either really off or my car is having some issues. its reading my max rpm at 5k even if i go above that. my boost is at apparently -56 in/hg. and yea a number of things are off despite my calibrations of weight engine size turbo pressure and such. idk whats wrong it might be the adapter but it worked perfectly for my grand prix. (i know not an import but still) HELP!

I would say way, way off. You can alwaus buy a used ap from the classifieds here, and sell it anytime for likely what you paid for it. They sell in seconds on here lol. Cobb also has a buyback program.

I vaguelly remember having to work a kink out like this, and it ended up being a turbo dynamics table that was too sensitive.

To correct it, my tuner and i Zero'd out the tables and took some trial and error runs to work it back in to be smooth. I saw this more in longer gear pulls (4th / 5th / 6th) rather than down low though.

the 02-05 wrx's have a 16 bit ecu.

04-07 Sti's have a 32 bit ecu....

08+ cars are Canbus.

so no, your AP for a 2003 WRX wont work on any of those other cars.

your best bet is to go to a shop and let them diagnose it. you simply dont have the tools to convey the information necessary to diagnose the problem over the internet.
