Default OR: 2005 RSTI --- FULL RS to STI CONVERSION --- NEW PICS (Post #73)

I hate to do this, but its time to sell the garage queen and move on. To call this just "a swap" would be an injustice...

The shell and frame of this car began life as a 2005 2.5RS in the color Platinum Silver Metallic. It is accident-free and I have the clean, clear title in hand. Everything else; the entire drivetrain, steering, suspension, cooling system, brakes, harnesses, ecu, dash, etc. etc. came from a 2005 California STI with only 16,506 miles on the odo. I have the title from it too.

The RSTI now has 49,844 miles, though that will probably increase a bit since I plan to drive it any time the sun shines and I have the chance before it sells, cuz I know I'm going to miss it dearly when its gone. While it does have the nicks and scratches of an eight year old car, it has been meticulously maintained; washed, clay-barred & waxed routinely and is virtually rust-free.

Though the motor is pretty much stock, I have made a number of small modifications to the RSTI that I think make it better than the oem STI, both cosmetically and mechanically. Here is the list, covering the oem highlights and all of the mods that I can remember right now:

Engine:
2005 STI 2.5L w/ Stock 6 spd Transmission with 49,8xx Miles
Group-N Motor, Transmission, & Pitch Stop Mounts
Redline fluids in Tranny & Differentials
Fresh Full-synthetic Oil every 3,000 miles since purchased

Suspension:
Feal Custom Re-valved oem STI Struts w/ Shortened Bumpstops and Zerk Fittings (20% firmer than stock & easy to re-grease)
Swift Springs (Approx. 1" lower than stock)
Group-N Front & Rear Strut Mounts (Top Hats)
Spec RA-R Lateral Links w/ Pillowball Bushings
New oem rear Swaybar Mounts & Bushings March 23, 2013
Professional Alignment done April 3, 2013

Brakes:
STI oem Brembo Calipers & Rotors (turned once, when new pads were installed)
Hawk HPS Brake Pads (used approx. 12k miles)
Goodrich Stainless Brake Lines

Wheels & Tires:
OEM BBS 17x8 Wheels
Brand new Nitto "Motivo" UHP All-Season Tires in 225/45-17
Subaru Locking Lugnuts & Key

Exterior:
05+ STI Rear Bumper & Fender Arches
05 STI Hood, Scoop, & Splitter
STI Headlights w/ Levelers
STI Ltd. Roof Wing (oem)
STI Ltd. Trunk Lip (oem)
STI Ltd. Style Urethane Front Lower Lip (JNA Performance)
PSM painted WRX Sideskirts (because I prefer them to the STI skirts)
Badgeless Grille (Professionally modified & painted by Artistic Auto Body who also did the paint matching on the above parts)
De-badged Trunk Lid

Interior:
STI Ltd. Dash and Center Console with Production Number Badge (#052/800)
STI Ltd. Heated Cloth Front Seats
WRX Ltd. Black Carpet over Dynamat (sound deadening material)
WRX Black Door Cards
Wrx Black Rear Seat w/Pass-through
Custom Micro-Suede Headliner
STI Embroidered Black Carpet Floor Mats
STI Auto-dimming Rearview Mirror
2010 STI Steering Wheel w/red stitching & with fully functional Onboard Controls (stereo & cruise control)
Kenwood DDX516 Touch Screen Double-Din Head Unit
USB & Ipod Connectivity (Ipod & USB connector in Glovebox)
Bluetooth Module w/ Microphone
Infinity Kappa Component Front & Rear Speakers
Under-seat mounted Subwoofer

The bottom line....
You can buy this STI at Lexus of Portland for $26,000> http://www.lexusofportland.com/Vehic...-OR/1940632453

-OR- You can buy mine FOR $18,500

Oh.... I almost forgot... Ask me about the cost of car insurance for this car versus the oem STI! (wink wink)

-Doug-

I like the idea of having a STi and pay only RS insurance..I bet it's $200-$300 cheaper for insurances..wish it had a sunroof though..how much does it weigh? I know it's alot lighter then a STi

While true, insurance won't cover anything at all from the swap if it is ever in an accident, and it would be a lot easier to be totaled.

Very clean swap, though. Looks better than most STI's I see.

You are largely correct... if the owner opts to cover the car simply by submitting the vin# to the insurer it will be treated for value as the 2.5RS it began its life as. However, if it is in an accident, the insurance company will pay the same labor costs to take it apart and put it back together as if it was an STI. They will also cover the cost of most parts if the parts had replaced necessary oem parts (up to the cost of the oem parts they replaced). For example, if the STI hood was damaged they would pay the cost of the oem RS hood and the owner would pay the difference as a deductible, unless the body shop can get the cost approved. And since the owner will have saved as much as $2500 a year on insurance he would likely be able to rationalize the extra repair expense. But you are right; if the car is in a very serious accident the insurer will be quicker to declare the car totaled than they might if the vin# said it was an STI from birth.

Some insurance companies will allow you to have an appraisal done, documenting all of the ways the value of the car has been increased and will write the policy accordingly, but that would force the insurance premiums back up. Its a risk versus reward equation. For anyone who could not afford to buy an oem STI (since this car would sell for as much as an additional $5,000-$6,000 if it were an oem STI) or for someone who can't afford STI insurance premiums (like me) this may be the only way they can afford to get into a car of this stature.

If you save $5,000 going in and $1,000-$2,000 per year thereafter, and if you are fortunate enough to avoid a serious accident (like me, knock on wood) this car is a big win, since the only way most folks will know its not an oem STI is if you tell them.

I don't think my car is appreciably lighter than an oem STI, since it has the same frame and body (for the most part) and everything else came from an actual STI. The older RS body style weighed less than the 02-07 body style so those swaps ARE lighter.

Super clean very fast ride that handled like it was on rails. I've known him the whole time he owner the car and the biggest issue was a bad battery. Still for sale I presume? I'm not quite ready to buy (will be in the near future) but gotta say... You have one of the most beautiful, clean RSTi's I've seen... I've had my 05RS for a couple years now, and have always wanted to do a clean swap for exactly the reason you said, but never had the guts to go through with it. Did you do it yourself or have it done professionally?
P.s.

Thanks for the props. The answer is yes & yes. The bulk of the swap was done professionally, but I did do some of the work too. And of course I did the hardest part.... I paid for it!
