Default Tint %

There's an old thread from '04 about this, but I had to pull off my tints when I got here from NY (I had 35% all around). I can't stand not having any tints. Heading to CCA soon.

Any opinions on tints and being pulled over in Anchorage? Sucks to have to do 70%, looks like options are 5, 20, 35, 50 and 70. What're you all running? And have you had issues with APD? I don't want to get pulled over again, but driving with clear windows is the worst. Seems crappy to pay $200+ just for 70.

Thoughts?

Legal wise, pretty much "anything" on the front windows would be considered illegal up here, as factory tint already drops the light transmittance to ~80% or something. (so I heard from a cop)

I've had 35% and 25% (on a car I brought up). 1st car never had tickets, have had a couple with the other ones. I've just paid the fine rather than remove and replace, though that was when it was ~$100.

I'd personally go with what you like and make sure not to drive like an ass to draw attention to you. As they say you got to pay to play. Whether tint, front plate or exhaust, there could always be an officer that decides today is your day.

That is pretty much what happened. And it was in Girdwood. He was just in a crappy mood, it was quota time I guess. I had never had an issue before, but I figured being in Girdwood, if I was fined and just paid he'd just haunt me forever and keep ticketing me. I'll see what the guys at CCA say, too, the minute I thought I could get out of unnecessary tickets by being a girl, I got one

I like 35, I see a lot of cars with darker up here. It's hard to believe my clear windows keep any light out... I feel like I am in a fish bowl. Blech

I've got 25% on front and 35% on the back. Haven't had any problems (knock on wood) been on for a year now. Have a buddy with the same no problems with him too. Just my .2cents

40% for the rear windows vs 35% won't be a huge difference IMO. As for the front sides having 35%...I guess you can chance it/roll it down lol. Question is will it pass inspections. There are ways to get around it if you read the details of AK's law towards the bottom of getting darker tint.

I used to have 5% all the way around on my wrx. Just didn't do the windshield and driver and passenger door. Never had a problem.

I'm 35% all the way around, and 25% on the rear. I love the look and never once had an issue with my 03 or my 2015.

I had 5% on the rears for my Impreza coupe and no problems. 20% in rears for my 2011 WRX sedan. No problems. But I did get hassled for the 30% front windows and 5% windshield eyebrow. I took off the eyebrow and got "caught" less often. Then on my BRZ I had 40% front windshield, 30% side windows and 20% rears. Was that way for well over a year, then got a fix-it for front windshield and side windows.

I'm debating doing 40% side windows with 40% windshield again or just 30% side windows. Or go 40% windshield and 30% side windows like before and taking my chances. It's just a certain undercover cop near my neighborhood around Boniface and Northern Lights that seems to care.

OK, maybe THAT is where I saw the whole factory windows are nearly at limit already...

Didn't know you had the windshield tinted as well. Medium Pimpin son..

On a side note, or tangent to this thread if you will. I find it aggravating the double standard the government has up here. I have seen 3 unmarked AST/APD cruisers thus far with tint on the front windows, and every TSA marked vehicle I have seen has also had tint on the front windows. Just annoying..

i vote 40/30. when i roll through "cop infested" areas, i always roll the windows all the way down.

Just yesterday I showed my mom a BP Legacy/Outback wagon at Carrs with 30% window tint all around with a thick, beyond-five-inches-tall strip of 5% front windshield eyebrow tint. I said, "Those cars get away with murder!"

The cop that gave me the fix-it for the 40% windshield said he didn't mind if I had light tint on the side windows. That made me think 40% would be a percentage that I could get away with. If I try 40% sides AND windshield it'll be to see how obvious it looks. When the cop pulled me over for the front windshield I had my windows rolled down and he said, "Oh I know you've got the side windows tinted too." I said, "Nope!" and I rolled up my window just enough to show him that I had it taken off.

By the cop mentioning not minding light tint on side windows, yet giving a ticket for windshield, I'd almost suggest leaving the windshield out. (possibly less hassle?)

That DOES go to show however, it is very much officer dependent.

Yeah, he's a cool guy. He just thinks tinting the windshield is super tacky. My night blindness says otherwise.

I drove back and forth by the police station often and even next to officer (behind or beside) with no hassle for a year, so it really just depends. The front plate missing was the quickest snag. I got pulled over maybe twice before I was given a ticket for it last year (by the same cop that gave me the windshield tint this year).

The airport police are the ones I worry about the most. He was real quick to pull me over and just give me a warning.
