Default Has anyone ever broken a Prodrive spring?

I did! Somehow I managed to break both of my rear springs.

'06 wagon, KYB GR-2 struts, group N top hats, sedan rear sway bar, whiteline solid end links and Paranoid Fab front fender braces

Was swapping out to my summer tires today and noticed a weird groan coming from the rear. In looking into it more, I realized both rear springs were broken in about the same place (inboard side). Didn't notice it a few weeks ago when I was rotating winter tires though.



I just have never seen anyone mention breaking a Prodrive spring before. These were the Blue ones, and I bought them used. I have maybe 30K miles on them, but I don't remember how many were on them before that.

Just to be sure, I wanted to see if there is anything else I need to be checking for. Is this a symptom of something else wrong as well?

Struts look fine, no leaks and they extend out fully when not compressed.

To replace: Epic, Swift or Mach V? And should I put all four in at once, or run whatever replacement I get in the rear and leave the Prodrives up front alone (no dealing with alignment then)?

Thoughts?

Swift and do all 4 and get an alignment.

Contact Prodrive.
I know they no longer sell parts but they should do something for you.

Mine also cracked at the end on one of front spring. Replaced them with RCE yellow v2 springs.

I was doing a tire rotation on my '04 Impreza 5-door, when I noticed that one of ProDrive springs was sitting funny on the strut. Broken. Went around to the other side. Yup, that one too. Both rear springs broken, in about the same place as shown in the OP photo.

I had noticed groaning when the suspension articulates, like when backing out of my driveway, but nothing seemed to be wrong in the corner that I thought the noise was coming from when I checked a month or so ago.

Maybe 50,000 miles on the ProDrive springs.

IIRC the ProDrive springs were manufactured by Eibach.

Everybody's Lowridin'. Broken Prodrive blue springs.


Now with new Tein H-Tech rear springs.




The dampers aren't really related to the Prodrive failure. Decided to go Koni, since I was talking apart the struts already, and the factory struts had 76500 miles on them.

Not on here much but I'm surprised to see that. I thought the prodrives were quality. I've had my set on my bugeye since new. Going on 160k miles & 10+ years.

Just something you shouldn't have to deal with at that kind of mileage on them.

Do you guys live in places with harsh winters?

I think the silicone silencer wrapped around the spring trapped moisture. You can kinda see in the photo that the lower part of the spring is rusted. The ends where the spring broke is rusted.

The car has lived through a few blizzards.

Both of mine were broken inside the plastic wrap on the lower potion of the springs. I am sure it trapped moisture and mag chloride in there which led to the failure.

Yes, the winters here can be long and sometimes harsh.
