is there anything i can do to make it a little bit peppier with my 4 speed slushbox tranny.

You want your economy car to be peppier... save up, sell, buy WRX. There is a forum for the NA drivetrain. I recommend you start with this thread:

Honestly, you've got a pretty bad starting point for a performance vehicle. I have a 2013 XV. It has 148 hp/tq. I bought it with a 5-spd so I could get a little more control over the engine powerband.

Bottom line, what's your goal for "a little bit peppier"? You might be better off with better brakes/suspension than trying for power. the Lightweight pulleys will, in theory, allow the engine to spin up faster. Less rotating mass.

thanks. im still a student and cant afford a wrx at the moment. since i have to pay all my bills with schooling. i called my insurance and asked how much more it would be to just to own a manual 2.5i and they said 150 more a year. but im really debating on just taking a hit and getting a manual one. my insurance a month now is 150. a wrx is 300 a month on insurance plus my other bills.

I agree with Loyale93. I have a 2007 2.5i that I bought because it was practical and I was fresh out of college. It's not fast or something you want to drive aggressively, but when you look at the cost of ownership, it make it's lack of peppiness completely worth it. If money is an issue, this is the car you want to own. Don't waste your money on mods, because they'll be more or less futile. Just enjoy the fact that you're able to get anywhere in any weather, with pretty impressive gas mileage.
