Default About to buy 2004 forester xt

What do I need to know? Has 100k miles and everything appears to be ok. Any known issues I should look for? Appears to be maintained well and taken care of. It's also an automatic.

You're probably hearing crickets because this question gets asked 5+ times a day on NASIOC. I'm waiting for unabomber to come down with his FAQ smackdown

Timing belt, make sure it has been done or plan on getting it done. check the radiator for any leaks, the OEM usually craps out around then. That's really all I got for you bud.

The only real turbo issue that I have found through research is just that the small TD04 needs to get replaced when higher mileage due to the seals wearing out. You may experience some hesitation or stutter when in boost, that is a sign it's going out.

Another sign is the smell of burning oil due to the worn seals. At the time people replace the turbo, most opt for the bigger STi turbos (VF34 and up) and an STi TMIC. If you do get the STi TMIC, you will need to alter the dump tube for the bypass valve.

That site is great for DIY's and other research though. That is the only time I really go over there. 99% of the time I am on NASIOC.

Picked it up for an overnight test drive. I found out it has a brand new turbo as of 2 weeks ago and talked to the tech that did it (dealer didn't do the work) and he said the seals were bad and the turbo was going out. Everything seems great on the car but I did notice one thing. When it's been sitting and everything has cooled, the transmissions shifts pretty firmly into 2nd and 3rd. A little jolt can be felt and you can also hear it. It doesn't sound or feel terrible but I did notice it. I looked underneath and I see it has an external spin on trans filter which is nice and a drain plug. I didn't see a way to check fluid level or condition though. Did I miss something? Also, by my description, should I be concerned about the trans? It seems to shift otherwise perfectly and once warm acts normal.

Has a new turbo already? Nice, that is always a plus. That 2 to 3 shift on the AT's are common. I haven't really looked around for a remedy to that. For me, it seems more pronounced when I am giving minimal throttle.

Likewise here for the trans issue...when in harder throttle its not nearly as noticeable...glad to hear its "normal"

Edit: I've been informed they will be replacing the glass on the sunroof and doing a complete timing belt job before I take delivery. This deal keeps getting better and better. I'm hoping to walk away paying 9-9500 out the door!

If they do that work for you and you get it for 9-9.5k, that is a hell of a deal man!!!

They are doing all that work minus the turbo which was done 2 weeks ago by an independent. I think it's a pretty good deal too!

Got a call and the timing belt is done and the sunroof is replaced. I will be taking delivery tomorrow, so I'll let ya know the final deal then. Here is a "sneak peak" since I said I wasn't posting pics until after window tint. This was taken the day I brought it home for an overnight test drive to see if the wife liked it enough to drive it every day. Once she floored it, her mind was made!

Ok, so I ended up getting it for $8600...new sunroof, timing belt and pulleys and water pump and a new turbo less than 200 miles ago!

Sweet, then you'll get a good price for the stock turbo when you swap it out for something bigger :-)
