Default Anyone have their sunroof shatter while driving?

Driving up 93 when I hear a loud bang then open my sunroof slider...

Has this happened to anyone before? Covered by Subaru?

-Eric

EDIT:

Apparently this is pretty common...

God, I hope that doesn't happen to me. Did or are you getting it fixed? No out of pocket necessary?

There were a couple of incidents on here on the past. I am still surprised to see new occurrences, but still do not understand the cause.

As an engineer for building structures and envelopes, I've seen my fair share of spontaneously shattered tempered glass.

There's a few causes, obviously.

it could have been hit by a rock. Tempered glass isn't easy to break, but when it does, it shatters into lots of tiny pieces, that's by design.

it could have been under too much load. Something maybe in the way of the tracks, causing them to distort and putting load directly on the glass. Hitting a bump, or whatever could have put just that much more stress on it.

Or, it could be what was discussed in the link, a nickel sulfide inclusion. Tempered glass is heated up very hot, then cooled rapidly to impart internal stresses on the glass pane. It makes the glass a lot stronger, and causes it to shatter into tiny pieces when it does break. Tempered glass has historically been known to spontaneously shatter due to a small particle of nickel sulfide. This particle is typically in a liquid form, however it can spontaneously change to a crystal form. Depending on how and where the crystal forms, it disrupts the internal stresses within the glass, and you can have spontaneous shattering.

It looks like the glass shattered and fell out, but if you still have the glass, and can locate a pattern like this:

it could be a nickel sulfide inclusion.

roadsplatter: Just happened yesterday, hoping to get it appraised today. My insurance company said it should be covered under my glass coverage, which I don't have to pay anything for. I am going to call Subaru this morning but I doubt they will cover it.

Can anyone recommend a good glass shop to get it replaced in the Boston area?

you should call subaru.

a good friend of mine had his Mini Cooper skylight replaced when a similar thing happened, and he came armed with the information I gave him. Subaru's corporate technical department should be aware of this, it's a VERY widely known problem with tempered glass. Chances are, your local dealership will stare at you blankly, but have them call corporate.

I'd MUCH rather have a factory replacement for a sunroof. they're going to have to disassemble the system, and might screw things up, and the last thing you want to deal with is a leaky sunroof.

Ok I called Subaru and it is still under warranty so it is covered. I never bring my car into the dealer because I do all the maintenance myself. Anyone have a good experience with service at a dealer? I think heard good things about Planet a while back.
