Default Formula 1 2013 - Round 5: Gran Premio De Espaņa from Circuit de Catalunya

Last year's thread (with tons of pics!):

http://forums.nasioc.com/forums/show....php?t=2343714

Bob Varsha said it best: "This is a track with no secrets." Situated in the gentle hills of Montmelo, north of Barcelona, the teams know this track better than almost any other. They test here multiple times over the winter, and although the temperatures are expected to be much higher here than they were last March, most of their data is still relevant. This race also signifies the first of the "European season", and most (if not all) teams will be bringing major performance updates.

Last year, Williams' Pastor Maldonado snatched pole position (ater Hamilton's penalty) and the race win, despite front-row starter Fernando Alonso stealing the lead into the first turn. The Lotuses filled out the second row, followed by Perez and a trio of Germans.

The race finished in nearly the same order up front as it began:

1. MAL
2. ALO
3. RAI
4. GRO
5. KOB
6. VET
7. ROS
8. HAM

This year, Sebastian Vettel and RBR once again lead the championship after four flyaway races. Kimi Raikkonen is second followed by Hamilton and Alonso. Four teams in the top 4 positions!

Is this the race that Mclaren finally gets to grips with their under-performing car? Can Alonso shake a string of bad luck and go one better than his results here last year? Although extremely unlikely, can Williams cling onto last year's dream result and at least get some points?

Find out in just a few days!

I believe that's a development rear wing on the Williams.

Sauber have moved their cameras to the tip of the nose.

Love the new color scheme on the Sauber's. Can't wait for the race this weekend.

For some odd reason I hate getting up for work, but have no problem getting up at 430am on a weekend to watch F1. Weird.

Lots of development front wings showing up on Twitter.

Lotus with an "r"-shape turning vane on the endplate.

Cascading elements seem to be the current trend.

More cascading.

@ScarbsF1 suggested the removable panel was for a drag reduction device adaptation, but I don't think that's likely.

Comparison of old (bottom) and new (top) Caterham front wings.

There's rain in Spain. Mainly on the plain, but also at the track.

More update pics, courtesy of @ScarbsF1:

Another view of the "r"-shaped vane on the Lotus endplate:

Small strakes on the outside of the rear wing endplate:

FIF1 now using a small aero fairing on the front wheels:

Ferrari adopting the curved turning vane over the top of the sidepod inlet, ala Mclaren last year:

Mclaren and RBR also have new brake ducts, and the latter has opted not to use the blown hub arrangement just yet.

Mercedes have removed the three-winglet arrangement just aft of their mirrors in favor of a single vane.

This photo of the RBR shows a pair of small winglets that are mounted just aft of the gold heatshield. They're used to clean up the turbulent airflow that passes through the radiators and around the exhaust, before exiting the center of the engine cover just ahead of the "monkey seat". Above these winglets is a small radiator (possibly gearbox or KERS cooling). All of this is mounted underneath the engine cover and isn't normally visible, but it shows RBR is doing everything it can to make the car slippery, even the airflow traveling under the skin.

I added blue arrows to show the airflow path to the cooler and colored the winglets pink to make them easier to spot.

Williams' new turning vanes:

Williams' front wing comparison:

Mclaren front wing comparison (new version on top):

RBR testing airflow across pretty much the entire left rear of the car:

OOoo...*another* LR tire lost its center tread! That means Merc, Ferrari, and now FIF1 have had rear tire failures.
