Default Droning, Howling Noise coming from rear, not bearing, not brakes, maybe axle???

Long story short, I had to replace a bent upright and install a new wheel bearing on the drivers side of my 04 sti. Minor curb impact, but enough to bend a wheel and the upright, new bearing obviously to go with the new upright. At first I was hearing a terrible whirling, howling droning noise after it was all fixed, well, a spring clip had pulled loose on one of the ebrake drums and that problem was sovled...I had hoped.

THe noise is not rpm related, it is just rotational with speed. Its more noticeable under acceleration and less noticeable under engine braking.

Im hearing a sort of howling, droning, whirling noise coming from the rear of my car. One of the rear axles can me moved in/out or side to side(in relation to the car) a bit, enough to where I can make it make a noise when moving it with my hand, the other rear axle can't be moved a bit.

I know the front axles move in and out, but I know also that they are designed to do so more freely.

Any thoughts? I'm 99% the hub bolt is as tight as it can safely be.

Try throwing it on a lift and use a stethoscope to pinpoint the noise

ive had it securely on stands and had it rolling, but couldn't ascertain where the noise was really, it isn't nearly as noticeable without weight

It sounds like you have the same exact issue I'm having after my latest tranny rebuild... I'm splitting the case near the end of the month so if you don't figure it out by then, I'm sure I will

nothing gearbox related, I can at least ascertain that it's coming from the rear... Do rear axles normally have that movement???
