Default Acura adds standard luxuries to 2014 ILX

Leftlane: http://www.leftlanenews.com/acura-ad...-2014-ilx.html

Quote:
For 2014, Acura's entry-level ILX sedan will gain a number of previously optional luxury features in a bid to boost the car's profile among shoppers.

Starting at $26,900 - $1,000 more than last year - the 2014 ILX trades its cloth seats for standard heated (up front) leather surfaces (including leatherette on the door panels). In addition, the driver's seat is now of the eight-way power variety and a rearview camera is also included. Finally, Acura has also added a subwoofer and active noise cancelling technology to the standard audio system and all models get upgraded 17-inch alloy wheels.

The automaker hasn't changed the ILX's powertrain choices, which remain either a 150-horsepower 2.0-liter four-cylinder mated to a five-speed automatic or a 201-horse 2.4-liter unit offered exclusively with a six-speed manual gearbox.

Despite sales that are lagging compared to the automaker's projections, ILX has become the second best-selling Acura sedan in the U.S. So far this year, Acura has found 7,508 buyers for its Indiana-built four-door, eclipsing the similarly sized Acura TSX. The Honda Civic-based ILX is considerably less expensive for Acura to produce, and it's expected to eventually replace the TSX from the automaker's lineup entirely.

Sat in this at autoshow, seats (leather) were rock hard. Sat in leather Civic, much more comfortable.

What's that going to do? All they will do is cause a tantrum demanding they want things their way and saying "I'm not going to do it". This is where you just need to take them by the ear, put them in a time-out, close the door, and give them no dessert.

Is it that much different than a Civic?

This is like Lexus selling a tarted up version of a Corolla for $32,000.

Because this!

Really Acura? Yoar lucky that people will pay extra for the Euro-Accord known as the TSX. Don't further ruin the brand by taking that away too. You already pulled the RSX/Integra.

plunk10 likes the TSX V6, but would never consider an ILX.

That's pretty much how the reviews I've read go down as well.

Lexus tried the ILX formula with the HS250 and failed.

Here it is, side by side with Corolla.

I have to be honest, I think Lexus made the corolla look good there. Not my kind of car, but it sure looked very nice compared to the base corolla.

Acura needs RWD to be taken seriously. If I were king for a day, I would make them dump the stupid shield grill and make them manufacture RWD car. Their entire car lineup is totally forgettable.

At least Lexus put some effort into it and offering it exclusively as a hybrid. Part of its eventual death was the cheaper and better executed, IMO, CT200h.

Spot on. There is nothing unique about the ILX or Acura. They are trying to recapture the Integra to Civic "magic", but those were different cars at a different time. At the same time, they are just stepping on the toes of the better, IMO, TSX. All I see the ILX as the Mercury Milan was to the Ford Fusion, just a generic badge-engineered upgrade over the mass market car. While the ILX may sell ok, it puts Acura in an odd position, is it a luxury brand or just a premium brand? The only car in their lineup that is remotely exciting or note-worthy is the TSX sedan and sport wagon.

I still imagine the meeting where they cancelled the Integra.

"How about we take our number one selling vehicle and stop selling it?"

You know Honda is having issues when they won't sell their own cars in their own market. No more Civic, Accord, Inspires, or Legends in Japan any more. See below for what Honda sells in Japan:

Really is a shame how far down the ****ter Honda has gone. Yeah the new Civic is improved, but it still looks like an upside down gravy boat. The Accord is really the only thing they have going for them. A woman I use to date had a TSX, the interior felt like a spaceship, not sporty at all. It drove terrific, but just felt gumpy. The TL is a joke, I am surprised they haven't pulled it's breathing tube yet, and the ILX is for suckers who don't know how to cross-shop.

If I remember correctly, the HS250 is derived from the Avensis and not the Corolla which makes it closer to the Scion tC than any other North American Toyota.

The whole reason I hate the ILX is that it's a cynical car. The Integra was a fine sports compact and the TSX made a reasonable argument when it debuted in 2003 for $25,995. The whole reason Acura existed was to showcase Honda's finest engineering, but the ILX is a cynical exercise in marketing that reeks of Cadillac Cimarron.

That's part of the reason their lineup sucks so much. Without the demands of the Japanese market to keep them in check, their lineup loses focus.

I used to think that RWD was the only way for Acura to get serious as well, but now I'm not so sure. Audi seems to be doing so damn well with their Quattro, taken just as seriously as the RWD BMW or MB. And the electric steering, which is numb anyway even on a RWD car, and the increasing HP all over the industry make pretty good cases for AWD these days I think. Maybe Acura can push their excellent SH-AWD more aggressively on all of their models as a substitute for RWD? It just might work if they do it right.

Yea, Honda tried to cater to what they thought Americans wanted and diluted the whole brand.

The funny thing is when car makers due the obvious (like Ford bringing over their European style), people tend to buy them. People want sporty, cool looking, reliable Hondas. We will always complain about not having a $30 grand RWD Honda coupe with 300+ hp at 8800RPMs, but we'd settle for a good RSX again that handled amazing like the Type-Rs used to and would really like it.

1) The HS 250 was based off of the Avensis, not the Corolla
2) The HS 250 was not meant to be an ILX type of vehicle. It was meant to be to Lexus what the Prius is to Toyota... a dedicated hybrid model for the brand. It was supposed to be the car that Prius buyers wanting more luxury and a more conventional look would buy. For the USDM, Toyota switched gears and pulled the HS 250 in favor of the CT200H... which is actually based on the same platform as the Corolla/Matrix.
