My name is Mike and I live in Frederick, MD. When are you moving to MD/VA? As for insurance rates, I am only 19 (w/ 2 speeding tickets around 2 years ago) and I pay about $200/month with Progressive. I believe insurance rates are fairly good here but Maryland wont let you do much to the appearance of your car. Lots of limitations.

I'm in Abingdon MD - I think what he's referring too is tint, etc. Lord knows I've seen enough ridiculous hondas that I wouldn't worry about that...

I'm 25, have no tickets, and with full insurance (including replacement), I pay 171 a month through Kemper..

If you're moving to MD, northern Harford county is nice if you don't mind a bit of a drive to baltimore..

Yes, the limitations are mainly on tinting and lighting. White outs (clear lenses) I have been told are illegal as well as blackouts or blue dots. Basically anything considered "distracting" to other drivers can get you at least pulled over. I have friends who have been pulled over for legal light mods that were actually approved by the department of transportation. Most of the time you dont get charged money though, which is good. You just have to get your vehicle inspected with the things changed back (then change them again when you get home).

Really? I didn't know clears where illegal.. I've seen a lot of people, particularly Hondas, with them.. Bobalouy put clear sides and fronts (if I remember correctly) on his black MY99, and they really looked good - not sure how they'd go with my red, but they where a nice contrast with the black..

What sort of exhaust are you running, Scooby? I've currently got a Rallispec N1, and no one has said squat to me other than "wow", or staring slack-jawed in amazement.. So I don't think you'll have any problems there, although I can't vouch for emissions when you go forced induction.

I live in Beltsville, Maryland. I'm about 20 minutes from downtown DC and about 40 minutes from downtown Baltimore. As for tuning I usually reccommend Rallispec in New Jersey. As for auto insurance I have Erie insurance and pay about 750.00 a year ( I'm over 25, decent driving record).

Well, what type of work do you do? If its tech related, you cant beat Northern VA. All the giants of the tech world are there. Government, cant beat DC, even with cutbacks. There is a booming medical industry, among other things. Nice areas would depend on what you are looking for. Coming from Hawaii, you may want to be near water, Annapolis MD has that feel. Baltimore has some interesting things going on, but personally I prefer DC (except for Camden Yards and the Inner Harbor) for just about everything.

Subaru nuts are very welcome. Join us at the Autocrosses. you may be required to have your car's emissions tested at some point, but thats about it for the car itself, I think. You will need to reregister it in MD, they sometimes crack down on residents with cars in use in MD and not registered in MD (tax thing). Getting a new Drivers License can be done relatively easy all over the state.

Police activity on the highways is pretty typical, not as bad as some states I hear.

Will you be driving across the country?

Hey Guys...
Thanks for the replys...
Basil- Appreciate the info..Especially knowing Rallispec is up the street

For Technical purposes I will 39 when I get there...I definately will be hopefully working at a government contractor in Dahlgren or surrounding area.. It's good to know That the medical field is booming as the wife is a MRI/Catscan Tech (John Hopkins???). I will be retiring from the Navy next year so I will hopefully get hired on at one of the MANY Contractor companies in your area...We have no kids(Yet) cept for 2 puddy tats..Want a house for sure with a seperate shop (hehehehe) to work on my monster in my off time...(I hope to get a lift, and some other goodies to help my Scooby and other projects out). So I am sure that veterans benifits apply..And when I get it We can have our own installfests...: )....I do plan on driving Xcountry but not in the Scooby...The current plan is to sell our Jetta next year and buy a SUV (For the wife) in Oregon and drive accross...Hopefully I can already have a house by that time...Would like somewhere sorta out in coutry but not to far from Work/Things to do...The Burbs I guess...My Scooby should be waiting on me when I get there....Just in case you guys see me..it's a Aspen White 2 Dr with 17's and Ver5 wing, painted sideskirts and hopefully by that time a TURBO...Keep the replys coming as I am compiling my database...Later down the road I might have one of you guys send me a Sunday paper from your areas...( I will pay for it) to check out the housing situation and employment hopes...Thanks appreciate the help..

I have only HEARD that white-outs (i.e. clear tail light reflectors with colored bulbs) were illegal because they do not reflect RED like they are supposed to. I cant confirm it. White-outs would probably look horrible on an RS anyway. As far as clear corners and side markers...you got me...??

The guy who posted about Northern VA was dead on! I lived in Laurel and worked at the Goddard Space place (NASA). The northern VA area is over flowing with tech jobs. The area where the one member Lee lives is also a fast growing area. He lives a little ways outside of DC in a Maryland suburb. I was getting the shaft from the insurance company for a year or two and that was without any accidents or tickets. I ended up with a place on Main Street Laurel. You give them all your info and they post it in some insurance compay site and everyone bids on it to see who will give the lowest rates. They cut my bill in half that way and I had a better policy then before. That area sucks for door dinging, tailgating idiots who drive fast in the snow and ice and slow in the summer months. There is alot of auto-x events around there and alot of members in the area. I got tired of the hassles and moved to Japan though, well that and a FAT SACK OF CASH!

Scooby South, I live in the Washingt DC area which happens to be in the most expensive place outside of DC to insure a car(Prince George's County, Maryland). I'm 33, single, no tickets(since '88) and no accident(since '91). I pay Geico $530 every six months. We have 2 places they autocross here - both within a 45 minute Sunday commute from each other, Ft. Meade and Rosecroft Raceway.

Nice place to live? Gaithersburg, Maryland. There's a commuter train that will take you to DC rather quickly. If you decide to drive, I'd like to remind you that Washington DC is 2nd worst in traffic(next to L.A.). However, the traffic in PG County isn't as bad as Montgomery County(where Gaithersburg is) and Northern Virginia(the worst traffic).

Northern Va has some nice places to live also.

Oh yeah - you shouldn't have any problem getting a job as a contractor, particularly with your experience in the Navy - and you're definitely coming to the right place..

The only problem with getting close to DC is that cost of living is ludicrous - you can put 250k into a house and end up with very little.. If you don't mind a commute you shouldn't have a problem - my drive to work is about 35 miles, takes about 45 minutes, through back roads - I work in Hunt Valley. My father commutes to Columbia every day from abingdon as well, it's about an hour on a good day..

As to sending ya a newspaper, no need - check out http://www.baltimoresun.com - it's the local paper here, and should have everything ya need..
