Most universities offer a discount on office if you go to the bookstore.

I do have a copy of office 2007 that I could lend you and might be able to obtain a copy of 2010 fairly quickly if you're looking for a "free" version.

Like someone else mentioned unless she's doing her masters through a terrible school like TRU-OL, you get extremely cheap Office.

I r internet robinhood?

Office pro plus is pretty expensive. A lotta people buy it because they just need word and excel, but like the idea of database support.

Have you considered using Google Drive?

You can access it if you use gmail, and you don't need to haul a laptop around, since it's a cloud service thats identical to open office. Auto saves as well as letting the ability to share with peers and prof's, haven't opened Office for like 3 years now.

The last option is the best option (in certain scenarios)

In my experience in cases where correct and specific formatting is important, OpenOffice is a bit of a pain in the ass. The formatting tends to get ever so slightly skewed when the documents are opened in Microsoft Word VS Open Office word equivalent. If she's doing her masters thesis then formatting will be of great importance.
