Default 2012 dash rattle- seriously annoying

This dash rattled started after about 2K miles. I now have 11K miles. I brought it in 3 times now and it STILL isn't fixed. First dealership changed the speaker grill. Second dealership wrapped wires in the A piller. I told second dealership problem was still there, they kept it for a week and order "a replacement part for the dash". Now after looking at paperwork, looks like the speaker cover was yet again replaced.

I am going nuts here. The noise is INSIDE the dash. When I tap on the dash, it rattles. It only does it when the sun isn't up oddly enough. Something expands and stops it when the sun is up and the dash has expanded.

Here is my video this morning of the rattle: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=z8kvJ...ature=youtu.be

What am I supposed to do?

Sounds like you have a rattle gremlin. All cars do these things, unfortunately. My front seats make noises, my clutch pedal is getting really loud...
You may try another dealer.
good luck!!!

No, not all cars do these things. I have NEVER had a car with 2K miles rattle like this. I have owned quite a few as well. Even my old beat chevys and toyotas with well over 100K never did. My jeep with 180K doesn't rattle and I beat that thing off-road. never had this issue before.

My clutch pedal was really loud, they replaced the spring when I brought it in for the dash rattle this week. It is not creaking anymore, but I give it another 10K to do it again. I am just about done with this car.

I've noticed the same. One of these weekends I'll tear into it.

I feel ya, my car rattles too. Badly.
And I'm glad to hear that I'm not the only one with the creaking clutch pedal. I was juat trying to be optimistic as there are much worse things that your impreza could be doing. Like burning oil. I do know what being "over this car" feels like.

Same here. I found that the majority (not all) of the rattle was caused by the strip that that covers the wires for the power mirror and in my case the remote start. A little bit of dual sided "sticky tape" fixed the problem.

they already did that. This is something loose. You can hear on the video it has a vibration sound to it.

I also had a rattle in my compass mirror, but it easily tightened up.
i wish the whole interior wasn't hard plastic. It amplifies the interior noise for sure.

The 2012 Impreza's aren't so much hard plastic anymore. On my 2008 OBS (same interior as your WRX - or close) had a lot of rattles that were associated to wiring that was not taped/secured in the dash and A-Pillers.

We have the same rattling noise, I believe. I've tried to track it down, and it. seems to me to be coming from inside the dash somewhere on the driver side.

Well the good news is that I fixed the rattle dash. As a temporary fix I stuffed some CDs between the windshield and the dashboard and that fixed it! As a more permanent solution I got one of these in place of it.

P1010686 by RoyBelluomini, on Flickr

No more rattles, no more overly-high wind noise, no more fighting to get into gear and into reverse. I will miss the AWD, but the trade-off to me is worth it.

They sold me this limited model run at invoice price and gave me $17,700 for my Impreza. I paid $19,000 a year ago and 12K miles put on in that year. The value it retained was phenomenal. Losing only $1300 in a year made this deal way too hard to pass up.

Best part is the 6 speed transmission is like a dream and just falls into gear with no effort. MPG? Better than the Impreza. 100 miles on it and I am registering 30MPG already. I am not babying it either. The same commute with the Impreza was reading 28 and calculating 26. Difference is with the added torque that peaks at 1700 rpms I can almost always keep it in 6th gear. Theres enough pull down to 30-40 mph in 6th to get moving without a problem.

Sorry to leave the Subaru family, but the base Impreza just wasn't designed for me.

Congrats on the GTI. I came pretty close to getting one, but I thought at the time that I may be moving to serious snow country where I'd really want the AWD. Have fun!

Thanks guys. The power, transmission and mpgs are exactly what I was looking for. Hatch space looks half the size, but I measured it with a tape measure and they are nearly identical. Both seats up and down. Literally with-in an inch of each other. I think the shorter hood makes the car look a lot smaller.

I have a Tundra and off roading jeep cherokee. If I get stuck in either of those the snow is over 20"...at which point the Impreza woulda done no good.

The only VW I would ever get would be on lease, too many mechanical issues. I'd rather had dash rattles than all the issues I've heard about with the GTI.

Enjoy your car though, to each his own

Bumpy road + no radio = rattles,

you can always be pro active and try to put a thin slice of electrical tape around the corners of the speaker panel and see if that makes it a tighter fit. Your car is made up of alot of components and expecting it to be noise free when things expand and contract and then you add in the flex of the chassis on a normal trip. Mercedes, BMW, AUDI use heavier components with tighter tolerances and you pay for them.

The earlier model years of the new style ('10&'11) had issues...like any new model year, including my 2012 impreza. 2012, 2013s are solid from what I have read. Besides, the way I go through cars, I won't have this one much past 3 years.

You gotta be kidding. I should not have to figure out how to stop rattles on a brand new car...no matter what make it is. Even the dealer couldn't fix it. This "deal with it" attitude is too old school thinking. I have owned about 20 cars and never once had issues like this. After owning 4 Toyotas, some with over 100K and one with over 200K they were all rock solid and quiet. Subaru being another Japanese company I thought would hold their "tolerances" tighter.

And for the record, I did try several things, including taking the damn speaker grill cover off completely, and partially popping it up. It wasn't until a member here told me to stuff stuff between the windshield and dash that I stuck some CDs in there and that fixed it. Sad.

Also my clutch creak came back as well. Something else the dealer supposedly fixed after 2 attempts.

The car was straight up noisy. Tire noise, wind noise, rattles and creaks. After spending north of 21K with taxes these things are inexcusable on any new car. I shouldn't have to wait for the sun to be shining and heat my dash up for it to work properly...

The 5 speed was also very difficult to use. Gears never seemed to line up, grab point always felt different, stick was very difficult to put into gear, reverse never lined up....For a "sporty" car, the manual transmission was more like work than fun. Maybe I have higher standards than most, but I just wasn't happy with the car overall. The automatic model would have been more enjoyable to me I think, in this car.

The Impreza is a cool car and there are a lot of things I did like about it though. Seating position was very comfortable, AWD with tight steering, back seat room and cargo capacity on roof with factory bars. Styling is one of the best hatches. I think highway sway was less than GTI, although the GTI feels like it can take offramps faster, uniqueness- not that many, there are a lot of GTIs, now I am just another car on the road.

They both are great cars, the Impreza just wasn't "up to my standards" I guess.

Imagine all that plus a sqeaky seat and oil consumption...
I agree with your rationale. It gets to be a headache trying to replicate 20 problems at a dealership.
