Default Difference in header sounds

So I've been thinking about getting equal length headers and a EWG up-pipe but I can't decide which on to go with. I don't want it to sound like garbage. I keep watching these videos on YouTube and ill look up the same pair or equal length headers and a lot of times the same exhaust but some of them sound awesome but some of them sound like a damn civic with glass packs, all high pitch and whiny with alot of rasp. How am I supposed to decide???

Listen in person. I have Perrin big tube headers, cobb up pipe/ewg, invidia catless dp, invidia n1 street and its a unique LOUD sound that i love. Still rumbles at idle and SCREAMS at wot.

Making a thread telling us you cannot decipher the difference between Equal and Un Equal is not going to help you decide.

Well I've been looking at Perrin and a couple different ones. But does anybody know why one would sound different than the other with the same exhaust and headers? Maybe one has EWG and the other doesn't???

This is my car with the Perrin ELH on the stock exhaust - it sounds damn near like it does in real life, but the video just makes it quieter and a little higher-pitched.

Oftentimes, the camera/video equipment will pick up different noises differently, so the cars sound different. But really, you should hear one in person before buying.

Great video but I need to know if its gonna have a $h1tty sound WITH and exhaust. Since that's where most the sound comes from. But I have the invidia N1 and invidia DP like boosted Ben so I guess I'll go with the Perrin headers as well. I wish I could hear yours boostedben.

KillerB Holy headers sound pretty badass with the n1 and I usually hate the sound of EL headers.

I don't want the "Subaru rumble" per say. I just don't want it high and raspy and annoying so like a damn weed whacker. That's the sound of rice

A subaru on EL headers sounds nothing like a "damn weed whacker". You should fix your ears.

IMO, KillerB is the closest you'll get to the sound of a UEL header while being an EL header. If you're going EL, you will be losing that subie sound.

Meh, I love the Subbie note, the engineers at Subaru do as well. Its impressive that they keep the note on a performance car where easy gains can be had. thats enough reason for me to keep the rumble on my car.

Except on the good Subarus they are all ELH from the factory.

As you already mentioned, the turbo back exhaust system is going to affect sound more than the header. All equal length headers will create a similar exhaust sound because of the change in pulse timing, but the rest of the system will dictate the overall sound.

You realize that UEL headers are a North American only thing?

My ELH didn't sound whiny or tinny until I put the downpipe on. Except the DP, my whole setup is STi.

^ well said... If you pair up the ELH with a q300, you should still maintain a nice deep note, an N1 wouldn't be quite as deep... Going catless would also make it slightly more raspy. You'll still make power gains with either header design, but the the EL will make more. I personally wouldn't be willing to sacrifice the sound for the additional 10whp the EL provides over the UEL, but to each their own

Post 14. I have had exactly TWO Subaru people call me out as having an unequal length header on my car. And buying based on sound is short-sighted to the max as there are 900 other items to consider that are more important.

Well I guess he way I see it is, if all th equal length headers are gonna give me the same drivability results, power, quicker spool, etc, why get one that sounds gross that'll make me regret it every time I'm not WOT and feeling the power when I can have the one that sounds great that I'll love no matter how I'm driving?

I have factory ELH's on my LibertyGT. Sounds gorgeous at idle. Nice and deep. Very nice. They don't sound so great at low load though. Bit plain if nothing else. At hi rpm or even high torque (put foot down) they really come alive and have a nice note. They have no sound at highway speeds (no drone at all).
So yea.. sound great at idle and awesome at 6000RPM. Pretty plain sounding otherwise.
