There is no affordable way to make a NA Subaru fast. You can do suspension mods to make it handle better and more fun to drive, but not fast. Sway bars, springs, and bushings.

I think that suspension mods will be best. They wont make it faster but it will be much more fun in the turns. How many miles do you have on your car and is your maintenence fully up to date?

Mod04wrx beat me too it

Bigger injectors will do nothing, and you will need a tune for them. you can not make an N/A impreza "fast", especially on $300/month. Sorry. Make it look good, and do suspension stuff.

That will cost a lot more than $300/month.....any swap will be much more than you can afford.

Honestly.....sell it and buy something 2 wheel drive. You live in Florida. I suppose that AWD is useful if you drive through a hurricane, but otherwise, you're just sopping up gas with those 2 other wheels driving. Getting a Honda/Miata/Sentra with the exact same crank hp as you have now will give you a 10% boost in power to the wheels. And probably a 30% reduction in gas usage. Or convert your car into FWD (I'm sure you know that Subarus made FWD before around 99 or so)

go find someone with a 2.5rs or something that is doing a real people's swap and get their motor for cheap. I constantly see old running 2.5L n/a motors for only a few hundred dollars and the power boost is nothing to sneeze at. It's no sti motor but it turned my ok impreza into a fun impreza.

Because yours is 98 i think any of the DOHC n/a motors (98 and prior 2.5rs, forrester, legacy...?) will be the easiest to swap but do your own research. Lots of people have done it and documented it so start reading.

Pair that with some well thought out suspension mods n whatnot and you will be left with an entertaining impreza. You will (hopefully) soon realize that 90% of the time spent modifying your car is actually spent researching and not turning wrenches.

If you're looking for a swap, my ej205 heads and disassembled v5 short block, td04, tmic, injectors, etc. might be available soon (maybe in 3-4 weeks) for cheap.

When I was n/a I did cams, intake, exhaust, reflash to make my car more fun, but in the end, I took the turbo route because it's just MUCH easier to make power.

I dabbled with two EJ22's in the past.. neither made power even with intakes and exhausts.. I knew that going into it though. I just did a panel filter and catback for sound on both, then focused on suspension and braking.

I suggest this for you. If you do want power, get a different car.. namely a WRX. Power is much cheaper to come by in those cars. Exhaust and tune and you're up 50hp over stock. That's a great power to $$$ ratio.

Obviously this is not an opinion for you and wasn't for me for a long time. Suspension and braking. Do them. Wheels and tires too. You'll have a fun car, trust me.
