Post 2010 WRX Sedan upgrading?

This is my first day on NASIOC and first post, so try not to slaughter me.

I have a 2010 WRX sedan that is pretty much stock. I have a full 3" SPT cat-back exhaust, TurboXS BOV, Epic Engineering springs, and thats about it besides a double-din and subs. When I first got my car I was amazed at how much power I felt, going from a MK5 VW to a WRX. With this being said, I got very used to the power/acceleration and it has left me with a thirst for just a bit more.

I have been reading forum after forum about what others have done to their cars and have been finding myself questioning the high amount of inconsistency throughout. I recently visited with a friend (female) whose boyfriend is/was a Subie whore, and got an amazing amount of power out of his 02 WRX (STi swapped). He had a box full of leftover parts from after he sold his car, some were not even for his year particularly, and gave me a CAI that we crudely held on top of my stock air box and determined that it is a pretty close match to fitting. This CAI has no identifying markings nor color, it is mill finish and has an opening for the MAF sensor. With this being said, I am not entirely sure if it is a correct fit, I will be taking apart and doing a dry fit of my stock air box to ensure if it is or is not. Even if it does not fit, I plan on purchasing a CAI (from what I understand a short ram air will somewhat hurt me, warm air in the engine bay) and of course mounting. I will only be dry-fitting, I understand that the car can suffer without a proper tune for a CAI.

What recommendations for CAI systems do you, the experts of NASIOC have for me, the noob of scoobadoob? What do you all feel about downpipes, and the manufacturers of said downpipes? Cost and quality? From what I have read, these few things are the essentials of Stage 1, and have a few more HP/Torques that can be squeezed out of them. I live in a pretty crappy area, there is not really much when it comes to "tuners" in my hometown in central Florida without driving an hour or two in any direction. I read great things about the Cobb AP, but feel that its price is not worth its "bang" so to speak. I am in contact with a tuner in Tampa who will hopefully sherpa me in a decent direction without stealing my wallet or raping my motor. I have read numerous forums on both the AP and open source, and I am still not finding a consistency that I am desiring. I understand that one must find a tuner with reputation, previous knowledge of my particular make and year/generation. I am not trying to be the fastest person in a car by any means. I am simply trying to tap out what hidden power is left in my mighty flat-4 without going crazy (upgraded TMIC/FMIC, upgraded turbo, internals, etc). One day I will seek significant upgrades, but not until I finish my bachelors

So basically what I am getting at here, if I am not beating this horse even further to death, is what I should do when it comes to CAI, downpipes, tunes/AP, or any other upgrade that I am ignorantly missing. I am a college student, I do not exactly have a pot of gold to just throw at this thing. I am pretty much voided warranty wise, 63k miles, for this vehicle is my daily driver. I have put 25k miles on this vehicle since purchase 10 months ago. I am a maintenance freak, I always service when the vehicle is wanting or requiring. I look forward to hearing response and feedback, and reading/answering any questions or comments that are graciously left for me. And again, I apologize if this subject has been gone over and over. I have searched to the best of my ability, and my crap results leave me here, with my own thread. Much appreciated everyone

You got that part right, at least.

Listen up, college boy: save your money and energies for school. Putting money into a car to make it less reliable (while paying tuition) will only come back to bite you.

"guru" is only meaning he has meant the post requirements on the forum to earn that title, it means nothing. With an attitude like that, you will not go far.

That being said, this subject has been done over and over again, to the tune of 10 times a day. Do your research, make informed decisions.

There is no "best" part. Anything you want to do will require tuning.

http://forums.nasioc.com/forums/showthread.php?t=533787 Read that 10 times, then read it again.

Okay, to be fair I skimmed, because DAMN! talk about crushing massive wall of text!

But from what I gather, you just need to read this:
http://forums.nasioc.com/forums/showthread.php?t=533787

Even though a lot of it is geared towards GD years, for what you are asking, most still applies.

Since you're new here (not saying I've been around long) read the Manifesto linked above, this forum, and the 2.5L forum. Everything you have asked has been discussed in depth a bunch. You will have better luck reading and learning on your own than starting threads. I learned this pretty quick and I assure you, you're better off that way.

It's easy to be an ass behind a screen. This is why I posted here, stating I'm sure it had been posted/reviewed repeatedly. I am not familiar with this forum, and I appreciate the considerate feedback. I would rather be over informed than under any day. I am guessing you all take a minimalist approach. Thanks again.

Since I'm bored at work today and actually read your post, I will help.

First, read the manifesto above, it will get you on the right track.

Second, ditch the BOV for the stock one.

Third, if you don't care about any warranty (not sure how much of a 2010 is left, I never buy new), you need to look into a downpipe and tune (AP will get the job done here). The downpipe will run you about $500ish, and the AP, about another $500-600 depending on where you get it from. For just over $1000, you'll have about a 25% increase in power. This is HUGE for the price. This is also a necessity for upgrading other things down the line. It also doesn't hurt driveability or longevity/reliably.

Skip the CAI.

Also, if you don't feel like going all in with the downpipe just yet, get the AP first and do the stage 1 tune. You'll gain a bit. Then get the downpipe later. This is the advantage of the AP vs a protune.. it allows you to upgrade the tune with it. It's probably very suited for what you need.

I'm just going to say this was a hilarious thread with all the images. It made lunch very enjoyable. @coogiburr I agree with @cmiovino and try not to let any mod you do be over what a student loan payment would be since your still in school. Cuz you just might be kicking yourself later. Trust me.

Searching this site isn't exactly the easiest thing in the world. Key words only go so far, so thank you for the links. It isn't like I am buried in student loans, thank whatever higher power there is for pre-paid college. Just have bills to pay and I save accordingly with my 25k salary. That being said I appreciate the feedback once again. The images are funny I will give the ******** that. Was not aware that more information was bad here, even in the rules it says to "give all the facts." I will just worry about getting a tune over the restrictive factory settings and finding a downpipe, possibly a different recirculating valve.

I never did understand how this site was "hard to navigate." I can't count how many times I have to move threads because it's so hard to understand that wheels have their own section, or so does 2.0 AND 2.5L powertrain.

/first world problems.

Search on google, it usually will lead to the threads on this forum or another forum. Also my .02 cents look for used parts if possible. Should save you some money. Have fun with car!

^ This. As I said earlier I visit the forums i listed for general knowledge care of other people's questions.
When I'm SEARCHING for info, use google. If you want results from this forum just add NASIOC to the end of your search. IMO that works better than the search engine on here.

Noted. Thanks for the feedback.
Google is the only thing that really helps the search. Going to sub categories is easy and well laid out on the site, not the issue. Using the "Search Tool" function within them is pretty touchy and I have had bad luck with it getting down to specifics (year, trim, etc.)

And as far as attitude goes in reply to another, I have none. When people are being trolls in the noob forum for the sole reason that they can use the site more efficiently than I, it seems pretty retarded. It was just a question with details, as stated in "the rules," and I didn't force anyone to read it no reason to get butthurt about it lmao
