Default Why is 0w20 soooooo much more expensive in Canada?

First of all we don't seem to have the same variety of products, most places either don't carry 0w20 or only have 1 or 2 kind. Anyway for a 5 litre jug it will cost you anywhere between 45 and 50 dollars (castrol, mobil 1 or pennzoil) at canadian tire, walmart and never seems to be on sale. Where do you Canadian guys/girls buy your lube?

Thanks!

Is your petroleum products taxed at a higher rate there? I'm paying $50 ish for a jug of royal purple at pep boys. That's a fair amount higher than the regular synthetics here. I'm wondering if its an extra tax somewhere. Like our $6 pack smokes ( no I don't smoke, just the tax on those " for schools" never go to anyone but the ones making the taxes)

We are taxed higher for sure (13% in ontario) but there's gotta be something else. For example, a 5quarts of mobil 1 AFE sells for $22.47 at Walmart in the States and for $48 over here.

Perhaps it's just "regular market forces" at play? Demand is getting higher because of more econoboxes running 0w20, while not much is getting shipped to us here in Canada, so maybe it pushes the price through the roof? (I'm just making a random guess here.)

Sounds about right. I asked a guy in the crappy tire for it and he looked at me like I was from Mars. Took 3 times to convince him that 0w20 does exist. Personally I bought a bunch while I was in buffalo and just brought it over. Seemed easier than arguments every time. Lol

Yeah, same problem here the 0w20 is hard to find and crazy expensive. Maybe i'll have to pick some up when i cross the border.

I don't know for sure, but I'd still guess that most of the difference is taxes, like gasoline. I mean really, the gas station I normally fill up at is half an hour away from the refinery where it's made and I still pay more than people in the US do for gas from the same refinery.

This would be my guess. Another overly taxed petroleum product.

How much is the Subaru oil at the dealer? I just saw a post at bitog where someone picked up Toyota 0W-20 for $5.70 a litre. You could try pricing that as well.

What's the USD to CAD exchange rate? Does that account for some of the difference?
