Help need advice on buying a baja
So I went to carmax. I should have known better. I ran the vin and paid the 700$ transfer fee to have a vehicle brought up from new mexico. I get there and it's in great mechnaical shape. The bolts are still annodized and it runds fine.
However, they did a piss poor job trying to touch up the paint. The roof and several of the panels are 'orange peeled' and I can feel crap under the clear coat. They're going to try polishing it down for me. Should I just look into getting it professionally painted later, or is screwing up the paint going to cost more than it's worth to fix. I've read anywhere from 1500 to 3000 for a respectable paint job. However that would mean 3layers of paint on it and I don't know if that would kill it.

You can polish down orange peel, but.if it's not done properly then you'll have some halo-ing in your paint. worth a shot if you're looking at a respray anyway.
There's also vinyl wrapping, it's cheaper than painting and it's proven to look good. plus you can go nuts with colours or designs |

Yeah I'd only worry about it if there's rusting/corrosion issues.
Vinyl wraps are only getting cheaper and cheaper, and as Nitro pointed out, you can have a ton of fun with the look when you know it's not forever. |

Funny, I test drove that very Baja back in May. By the time I had my financing in order it had been shipped out. Felt like a solid car during my test drive. What a small world!

wow yea! So just an update they fixed the mechanical issues, but 'forgot' to get the paint fixed. So I had to refuse to accept delivery. Also they didn't fix the windshield so I'm getting a new one from them. If all this is actually fixed this time I'll accept it, otherwise you may be able to purchase it again.
I think carmax's M.O. is to see what they can get away with, apologize and play dumb. If you're polite and stand your ground they'll fix stuff. It's just annoying because they said they would fix this and clearly didn't even try, even sent it to me with more damage on the flatbed?! |
