Hello,

I have a 2007 STI, about to hit 60K miles. Just recently noticed little amounts of brown liquid at the top of my coolant and also my overflow tank is lined with blackish brown gunk.

Car is running good and still pulls strong. I changed radiatior to a Mishimoto about 4 months ago (drained coolant was clean and green) and had a compression test done 2 months ago (numbers came in at 120, 121, 124, 127). I have yet to do a leakdown test but from what I can see now, am I in trouble? Here are some pics. Any help is greatly appreciated, Thanks =\

And inside overflow tank.

looks like carbon build up, so chances are you head gasket is letting gases into your coolant

If this was the case, wouldn't that show up on a compression test?

Do you have any symptoms of a head gasket failure like overheating or filling up the overflow tank during WOT driving? What coolant did you put in when you swapped in the Mishi radiator? Did you put in Subaru coolant conditioner?

I'd do a hydrocarbon test on your coolant first. That should give you a good idea of what's going on.

Ya, did ya use the conditioner? I just did my coolant 7500 miles ago with it and then my radiator just went out last weeks and there were specs and clumps of conditioner and it makes your overflow nasty.

Thanks for the feedback everyone. Had a leakdown test done by yimi. Cylinder 4 has 40% leakage and cylinder 2 has 20% leakage so that explains my oil consumption, glad i had that diagnosed because car was running perfect except the oil usage =[. Head gaskets turned out to be fine, my problem from my temp slightly rising and overflow tank filling and not taking back coolant was just bad caps not holding pressure.
