Default 2014 Impreza

Hi All,

I've searched the forum and elsewhere, and aside from a note that some 2014 Imprezas will receive the Starlink treatment, I haven't seen any new model year info at all. I ask because I'll be looking to purchase in the next month or two, and if the '14 is the same as the '13 (which I believe was the same as the '12) with just some minor trim differences, I won't wait for any official announcements. On the other hand, if there was a chance for a bit more power....well...

odds of a new engine are about 0.0%

odds of electronic gadgets, radio, etc changing 100%

the car was just redesigned, they just redesigned the Forester, and are working on the WRX/STI redesign/relaunch (no longer Impreza's, mind you) and then probably the Outback before they work around to making big changes to the 'new' Impreza.

All opinion, of course. But if they introduce a diesel or turbo Impreza in the US before 2016, come back at me and brag about how wrong I am, lol.

Probably add some new electronic gadgets or new grille, but more power? No. Theres no chance.

A TD XV with 6mt FTW. I'll order one today if it were avail. Even a turbo XV with 6MT would make me :-)

I can't watch YouTube videos at work (blocked by firewall). Yes, 42 MPG sounds right for VW's TDI engine. But where did Solistik get his 50 MPG combined and 350 foot-pounds of torque from? The VW 2.0L TDI engine doesn't provide those numbers.

OK, sounds good. 42 MPG combined is what I was seeing in my 2010 VW TDI during the summer months. With the winter fuel blend and cold winter temperatures, my combined average would fall to approximately 36 MPG.

I like my Impreza a lot, but I'd love it if it had a diesel engine and 6MT tranny. Golly, the thought sends shivers up and down my spine.

I still don't know where Solistik got his numbers. I'm not aware of any diesel engine that can provide 50 MPG combined while also delivering 350 ft-lb of torque. That's an engine that would make me swoon. Sounds like a fantasy to me, at least with today's technology. Maybe that will be possible in 5 or 10 years....

Best case would be some sort or performance diesel hybrid to get that power/economy balance. Don't think one exists today, though

it is spec'd at 350Nm, so probably just a misread. that equates to 258ft/lbs!

and the highway mpg is 50

The torque is nm, I didn't see that at first but I got those numbers off the subaru.co.uk website.

Ah, OK, that makes more sense. Yeah, I'd love to see that Subaru diesel offered here in the USA, especially if they could eliminate the high-failure items found on the VW TDI:
  • High-failure fuel pump
  • High-failure Diesel Particulate Filter
  • A water-to-air intercooler for the turbo that collects condensation when outdoor temps are 32*F +/- a few degrees, resulting in intercooler freezing/thawing, hydrolocking the engine, no-start situations, bent rods, and other nastiness
  • A sketchy emissions system with lots of failure-prone sensors, an exhaust flap that fails regularly, and lots of Check Engine Light scenarios

If Subaru ever brought their diesel engine to the USA, I'd be looking to see if they avoided VW's stupid design mistakes.

Mercedes has a slick new TD that reportedly makes sick amounts of torque and high mpg's.

From what I've read, the disparity in UL vs. diesel gas prices in U.S. vs. Europe explain why different engines make it to different markets. That said, I would definitely hold off on my forthcoming Impreza purchase if I thought a 2.0 turbo, a 2.5na or any kind of diesel were coming for '14. All evidence seems to say no on all counts though.

I still think they should offer the 2.5 NA engine that the Forester has in our car. It would offer a minimal hit to fuel economy and offer much better performance. Look to Fuelly for more justification about cost vs reward

I am not convinced their would even be a MPG hit in real world driving. Going from a Impreza to a Legacy I lost 1 MPG. Presumably this smaller-than-expected hit is from the Legacy operating at a much lower RPM compared to the Impreza. I live in the Northeast where flat ground is rare, the Legacy just has a much easier and smooth time getting around. This is measured over 30+ tanks of gas in each car on the same roads and during the same time of year.

Also with the Legacy I can regularly beat the highway MPG value on trips, with the Impreza I got over the highway MPG number once. Ever. That included 10+ trips with over 500 miles of sustained highway driving.

The 2.0 looks decent on paper however it is a bad pairing in the car. Maybe it works out better for people that live on flat ground in the south.

I would gladly buy another Impreza if I could get one with a 2.5.

I so miss the 2.5 and the non CVT trans. I agree that I would most likely see an improvement in MPGs in my situation.

Amen to that! ESPECIALLY IN THE XV CROSSTREK!!
I've been saying this since I bought my 12' Impreza. I would rather have the 2.5/6mt as at least an option.

Also worth nothing that the Impreza is about 400lbs lighter than the new Forester, which would close the mpg "hit" gap even more
