Default Does replacement ecu need flashed?

Working on an '03 WRX in which the ecu isn't sending any voltage/signal to the knock sensor so I bought a good used replacement today. I'm curious if it will need to be flashed in order to work or if its just going to be a plug it in and go type thing.

Yeah I was planning on getting the car retuned because its far from stock but was just curious if it was necessary in order to start up and run or if Subaru needed to flash it to match the new vin # or anything

Kinda depends on the mods (which you didn't list). If you have bigger injectors/turbo than stock or a bigger aftermarket intake then there is going to be an issue.

ecu should send proper signal to start car but will prob run like crap if you have a tune on old ecu. But it should start

Mods that may effect tune:

Injen cai
Walbro 255
STI pink injectors
Perrin fuel rails
Perrin fuel regulator
FP green turbo
MRT tmic
Nameless turboback exhaust

It's probably going to run like crap until its retuned but the point I want to confirm is it doesn't need to be flashed because my local Subaru dealer told me a used ecu needs to be flashed and if it doesn't then that'll save me $65

Stock injectors are 420cc. STI injectors are 565cc (not to mention the CAI and the turbo). It will do more than just run like crap. Fuel will be flooding your cylinder walls. It's called "bore wash". All that fuel will be washing away the lubricating oil. Just buy a premade email tune.
