Default 2002 Legacy AC Help needed.....

Hey everyone,

I am having an issue with the A/C compressor on my girlfriend's 02 Legacy. when you turn on the A/C, the compressor will kick on and then after a few seconds will stop and squeal. (which I believe is the belt screeching over the pulley). The tension seems plenty tight on the pulley, but I'm wondering if the compressor is going out, or is it possible the clutch on the compressor is bad? Can these be replaced separately? Or is it possible I can take it all apart and do a minor clean up and relube everything....

I'm all ears to any advice on troubleshooting so I can fix it at home before I have to take it to a dealer!

A clutch can certainly fail. It is basically an electromagnet and while I haven't had to replace one on a Subaru, I have on a couple of domestic models. There is also a bearing up front on it so the pulley can free wheel when compressor is not on. I'm sure someone here has direct experience with these compressors. Hopefully the compressor is not seizing up.

does it still blow cold? im having the same issue....it will squell when it comes on but still blows cold. I've narrowed it down to a bad clutch but good compressor but they don't seem to sell just the ac clutch . Does anyone know if there is a way to just replace the clutch and not the whole compressor? Its a 07 sti

If it's really a squeal it is more likely a belt slipping in my experience. You might try tightening the belt a bit more or maybe try some belt dressing to see if better belt grip helps. If so, you may want to get a new belt.
