Default Pioneer Appradio 3

Who got one, who's getting one? Figured I would start a new thread to separate the Appradio 3 info out from the Appradio 2 info.

My SPH-DA110 (Non CD/DVD) is shipping today from Crutchfield and I'll be installing it this weekend. I plan to primarily use it with my iPhone 4S with Waze for navigation and Pandora/iTunes library for Music. Stay tuned for a full review of the features/speed/etc. if that's something you're interested in.

Please feel free to share your Appradio 3 experiences/questions!

Pretty excited here!

Let me know if these allow HD radio to play while in app mode.

That's my only gripe with the 5500BHS and appradio 2.

I do not believe that they are HD radio equipped at all, but I will let you know as soon as I have it in!

Edit: Confirmed by Crutchfield advisor, no HD radio capability. I'm just hoping that I can run the Sirius app on my phone and play it through the radio whether it be through the cable (CD-IU201N) or through bluetooth streaming.

I think it's still ultimately the app support that is holding app radio back.

Iheartradio, pandora, hell even iPod controls still time out when I pop open waze or escort live.

Car media player is the only audio app that will play through (that I have found) waze or escort live. It sucks though because the app won't work with the factory SWC.

If you could play fm/xm while app mode is active though (keep SWC while using waze/escort live)... That would be awesome.

I was thinking about this head unit but I found that USB thumb drives dont work. I have about 500gb worth of music on USB drives and thats what I listen to. I just wanted to use my rooted android phone for gps.

Please verify USB drives do not work on this appradio 3.

I believe many of these app control/time out issues have been fixed on the latest firmware update which is included on Appradio 3 and available for Appradio 2. I have no SWC though so can't test it out for you.

Will do. I'm pretty sure it does say "USB devices not supported" somewhere though. From my understanding the whole premise of this unit is to work with iOS and Android operating systems rather than independently control media. It's one of the biggest reasons that there was no CD/DVD available until now.

I'm waiting to get a receiver as well, so I would value your feedback. So far from what I've read, receivers that mirror apps from the phone are all turds (I have an iPhone 5)

iPhone 5 should be a little different because it mirrors through HDMI OR thunderbolt connection. Not sure how it works exactly but there are a couple Youtube videos on it.

You guys are really missing out by NOT using ARLiberator with these, assuming you have a rooted Android phone (also assuming AR3 will eventually work with ARLiberator.)

It is 100% mirroring of your phone, ANYTHING you can do with your phone you can see/hear at the HU.

This, combined with Torque Pro, has stepped up the in-car entertainment exponentially.

My JDM ECU isn't readable with the cheap Ebay BT dongles so I had to buy a more expensive OBDKey that reads SSM - This will allow me to monitor pretty much all of the parameters available in Romraider -including knock events. You can even have alarms set up for max/min values of whatever parameters you'd like.

What more could you ask for?

I've also seen where you can mirror the apps on an Iphone once it's jailbroken....

However, stock, this things sucks....so much potential but Pioneer (or any other HU manufacturer) refuses to listen to what customers want. Take a look at all the cheap chinese android head units that are selling on ebay. They are filling the void that these big boys are missing. They will either catch up or go broke selling antiquated crap that no one wants. THIS IS 2013! Make something I want to buy! Why does some punk kid have to come up with a hacked piece of software to make the AppRadio do what PIONEER should have done? Blows my mind....(rant off.)

Good luck!

But can you control the phone/apps 100% through the headunit?

If not, I'll still be waiting on the mythical phone/mirrorlink hu combination where one isn't made by samsung.

Justafour,

Yes, you now have full control of HU, your phone is essentially now a tablet.

Google it, there are some good YouTube videos on it..

ARLiberator.

<------ This noob didn't read the manual.

I just found the option so what does app radio 3 bring to the table that app radio 2 doesn't?

And yeah, jail broken iPhones and ARliberator gives you essentially mirror link on the HU. I've seen you tubes of people playing angry birds and streaming netflix on the HU with it.

It's more apple/ google/ pioneer probably not wanting to get sued because some jagoff was launching a bird while accidentally spooling his turbo in a school zone.

The little eBay special sellers are fly by night so they don't care as long as your Paypal clears.

ARLiberator.

after doing a little research i see appradio 2 is what everyone is using for arl. appradio 3 just came out and it seems the selling point here is that they added bluetooth support which seems strange that ar2 didnt have it in the first place.

so i have a choice, buy appradio 2 and arl and live without bluetooth (will i really need it if ill be connected through hdmi or mhl anyway?) or wait for arl to update their app to work with appradio 3.

im not well versed in car audio but ive heard countless times on this forum and others like it that upgrading to a high quality head unit will increase audio quality. im assuming these pioneer head units are no different.

Justafour,
AR2 has a Parrot Bluetooth chip in it (I've seen it with my own eyes when I did an LED color change).

The BT allows regular calling, but not A2DP streaming. However, if you're going to use ARLiberator, you won't need it, as it needs to be plugged into the HDMI for it to work anyway. I suppose you might use it when you don't want to plug in your phone and just stream music, but I sure haven't missed that function.

The hope is that the hardware on the AR2 is the same as AR3 and a simple firmware update will enable A2DP, but it's only a "hope" right now.

I don't see why AR3 won't be compatible with ARL eventually - but I'm not sure I would bet on it if you're wanting to run ARL.

There seem to be no other real advantages to the AR3 over the AR2 - at least from what we know so far, unless you NEED the CD/DVD player that is available on the $100 more AR3.

I would also recommend running a dedicated device for the android device. I'm picking up an S2 for $50 today, just to run my AR2. I will have tasker automatically turn on my wifi hotspot when my AR2 connects to my BT. It is my hope that this makes the startup a little more fluid and I can run a dedicated "Auto" setup.

Also, look into Torque Pro - depending on what year vehicle you're running, a cheap ebay OBDII BT adapter may be all you need to run it.

Good luck!

One reason I decided to go with the AR3 now, is the ability for the Google voice toggle / SIRI Toggle.

I read that AR2 can't do that, but the 3 can? Would be nice to have that function with the SWC voice button.

Gotta say, as someone who has done significant datalogging/full ECU tuning for a while now I'm pretty unimpressed with torque. I bought into the hype, went out and purchased a Galaxy Player as an exclusive Torque device, and was severely disappointed. It's a fun toy, but not worth all the hype people give it. Definitely wouldn't change my head unit selection/plan just so I could mirror it.

AR3 does have support for Dash Command with iOS though which realistically gives you all the fun toy gauges of torque and just as little accuracy/proper sampling.

My biggest reasons for going with AR3 were bluetooth streaming, the ability to use Waze as my primary navigation, and price. For $399 with no CD drive it's pretty hard to beat!

I payed 370.00 for my AVH-X5500BHS with app mode
(Amazon)
Bt audio, pandora streaming, app mode, DVD drive, 4volt pre outs... And Waze is freakin awesome. Escort live if you have an escort RD with the live cable is pretty awesome too (assuming you don't need turn by turn guidance). It gives the big FU to Lidar guns (unless you are the first poor sap to auto report it to the cloud)

Good comment on torque though. I was on the fence about dropping 50 bucks on that app and buying a wifi dongle.

Not a bad unit at all, but I've never been a fan of Pioneer's regular touch screens or control layout. I has the P6300BT (flip out screen but similar layout) and started getting annoyed with it. I'm hoping the capacitive touch screen on the AR3 is a little more responsive and plays nice with app mode.

This is all just a big experiment but also because I HAD to get the Clarion flip out DVD unit that the previous owner installed out of there! Not only does the screen and touch control suck, but the sound quality makes me furious. The highs coming from the Tweeters WAY overpower the lows no matter how you set the garbage equalizer on the head unit!

The pioneer capacitive touch screen is quite nice. Nowhere near as good as current smartphone gen amoleds, but good for automotive use when you don't need to be busy messing with the screen.

I have an app radio 2 and have no plans on going to the AR3, as I use ARL with my gs3 and love it (torque pro Guages displayed on my hu for total cost less than defi advanced Guages + brain? Take my money!). With alpine type r 6.5" components (front & rear) & a 2ohm 300W rms jl audio 10" sub, the hu sound is great (with eq being handled exclusively by power amp, with hu settings of: loudness off, rear preouts set to sub, bass boost at 0db, and flat eq). With amps, the app radio 2/3 (the output specs are the same) using hdmi audio in sounds good. Not sure it'd sound as good over the bt audio b/c of bandwidth compression compared to hdmi.

I've just taken a quick look at these Pioneer Appradio HU's and they do intrigue me. I'll admit i havent done a full research, but can someone answer these questions for me?

I am using a Samsung S4 as my phone. I would like to upgrade my HU and want something I can 1) use Pandora with, or Spotify would be even better 2) use Google maps 3) bluetooth calling.

What does the Appradio 3 have that the Appradio 2 doesnt. Is it worth it to get the 3?

Also, I have been looking at ARliberator. I guess by getting that app it allows you to run your phone through your headunit. My question then is, does it need to be physically connected to the phone? Or can it be done through bluetooth.

And if Arliberator allows you to run your phone through your HU, this means I can run spotify, correct?

ARLiberator will allow you to do everything that you want. It's fantastic. I'd also recommend getting your harness and the ASWC from ae64.com, installation was much easier.

My question on AR3 vs. AR2 is: have they increased the screen pixel density, or is it the same display with more perks and compatibility?

I think display resolution is the same from 2 to 3.

Only changes I believe are the CD/DVD drive if you get the $499 version, Blu Tooth audio streaming, and voice activation (Google voice, Siri)

There might be others, but thats the ones I am aware of.

AFAIK ARLiberator does not work yet on the 3. Hopefully it will soon, since I just purchased the 3.
