Default Water-Oil cooler on 1998 V4 STi Type RA V-LTD?

Hey,

I'm preparing to do my timing belt stuff in the coming months and was wondering if my car had the water-oil cooler on the bottom of the block above the oil filter? It's a different water pump I believe and I'm sourcing parts.

As it stands I'm pretty sure all turbo'd EJ20's have that but I'm not certain. I'd look myself but I don't want to drop the whole undercarraige protection thing to peek at it.

Thanks in advance.

PS: Does anyone actually just know the part number for the water pump?

Yes it does. You can use a 91 Subaru Legacy Turbo water pump

has to be 91 though, 92-94 didn't have the cooler

Save ur money on the water pump. Buy a cam crank tools. Reseal the cams and the oil pump, they leak often. Rent out the tools or sell them for what you got them for.
Water pps don't go very often. Maybe a little green out if the back of the gasket and a pulley goes usually only on higher mileage vehicles. Do ur timing belt once and it'll take a half hour to get at the water pump. Only pulley u have to get off is the crank pulley. Also check ur idlers. If they make noise replace them. The toothed idler is usually making noise every 100-150 k Kms, and they like to explode

Speaks the truth. Thing literally blew up on my 92 Legacy SS. Thankfully non interference engine so it was ok. If it happened on your STI have fun with the rebuild.

I also just did my timing belt and didn't change the water pump. Resealed everything up and all is well. If you need some help or have questions about parts and part numbers don't hesitate to ask, everyone is happy to help.

Thanks for the replies everyone.

Yes the plan has always been, as with any timing belt job, to replace not only the belt but the water pump and idlers/tensioners. I realise the water pump breaking is not frequently something you see but as I can afford it without problem I'm just going to replace it for peace of mind.

So do all STi variants in 98 have the water-oil cooler?

Almost all turbo JDM cars have the water-oil cooler

Most USDM turbo cars have it too, I think its only the WRX and 92-94 legacy that don't.

I don't understand why people don't change their water pump when they do a timing belt. It's like an extra 100 bucks and potentially saves hours of work. Especially on older cars. And, you're there. Coolant system drained, it's just another 7 bolts. Oh well.

Make sure you change the little o-ring behind the oil pump. Order one for any post-2001 subaru. They changed the design, but they didn't supersede it for older models. It's compatible though.

i don't remember if there was a sticker - timing belt replaced ?
i'm pretty sure japanese owner replaced it at 10 years mark but when you open it up you should see if it was done.
and considering your car mileage i wouldn't bother with water pump though ppl will tell otherwise.

Hmm I don't remember seeing a sticker. Would it be on the timing belt cover? I'll take a look tonight.
