I changed my oil tonight and found this black object in my oil pan. It appears to be plastic and broke in two rather easily. Does anyone have a picture or any familiarity with the inside of the oil pan? I was able to feel around the inside of the drain hole and it seems like there is some sort of ring around the inside of the hole. Maybe this cracked off? I'm a little nervous about starting my car.
Thanks, Chris

there is a crush ring that keeps the seal between the drain plug and the oil pan... And you better pray to God that you replaced it when you changed the oil, or you'll find yourself cleaning up afte your car.

This stuff was on the inside of the oil pan. Stupid question, but where does the oil go from the pan? To the filter or through the engine? If it goes to the filter I won't be as worried, but if this stuff is going into the engine, that can't be good.

From the pan, some oil goes to the filter, while some goes directly to the crank bearings. When it goes through the pickup in the pan, it does go through a screen, which has fairly small holes IIRC. I think that you will be fine running your car, but I have no idea what that is, or where it would have come from.
